I bought a Sako A7 8 years ago. Stainless, original stock (before the had the rubberized exterior), 30-06.

I made a couple minor upgrades - swapped out the bolt shroud for a stainless shroud from a Sako 85, and I added a stainless bolt to replace the one that secures the bolt handle to the bolt.

I plan on eventually putting it in a Boyd laminate, and pillar & stainless steel bedding.

Question:

-Who else here has done any customizing of their Sako A7 (or of someone else’s even)?

I know it’s not a rifle with much aftermarket support, so I wondered if anyone else had done anything with it.
 
The reason I am interested in doo-dadding my A7 is mainly just ocd perfectionism. I don’t like plastic. I have seen pics of broken stocks on there, and I think a laminate is less likely to crack or to be warped from heat. Stability of the stock is important, but it is true that maybe it’ll never be a problem anyway and I may just be too anal about the whole thing. I can’t say I’ve actually had a problem with it.

Another issue is that the factory stock isn’t in line with my personal geometry, and I like the Boyd’s at one stock that can quickly and easily be personalized to myself, while also being able to adjust to friends so it isn’t something that doesn’t fit anyone else if I at some point lend it to a friend.

As for the bolt shroud, I didn’t like the plastic covering on the factory shroud. I think it’s the sort of thing that will eventually crack and fall of and look really bad when it does. But I can’t say it has caused any trouble yet.

I haven’t doo-added a car either, but I intend to put a HEMI in my Toyota Yaris and possibly flames, a supercharger with hood scoop, and a huge spoiler on the hood. Just kidding.

I have been very happy with the stock changes I have done on an 870 and a Mossberg 535. I have found that changing the stock angle and style has enabled me to instantly hit things accurately whereas from the factory I couldn’t even align my eye with the barrel. I have broad shoulders and and taller, and trying to turn my neck at a 90 degree angle to establish a cheek weld isn’t possible. Also I have often found the stock cheek weld to be way to high or low on many firearms (shotguns and rifles). I like hitting my target exactly and not “just about”, and stock fit is essential to this.

It may look tacky, but to reach farther out there requires a good cheek weld on a rifle. Hitting a target intuitively at the short ranges of a shotgun with instant target acquisition is also not possible without god stock fit. At least that’s the case for me.
 
Oh, and I also mounted my Zastava Mauser in a Boyds and have been 100% pleased with the results. This makes me want more Boyds.
 
I used to be a Sako A7 owner, a stainless 7mm-08 that I bought brand new when they 1st became available.
And yes, I too swapped out the bolt shroud for a stainless shroud from a Sako 85.

It was very accurate, but it had the infamous Sako ejection issue, so I got rid of it.
I now have a Sako 85 Finnlight, also in 7mm-08, and it does not have the ejection issue.


 
New A7 270..... got mine about then... figured I would pay over the top to get the best... lol lol my mistake.... mag wont hold rounds, pop out when walking... ejection issues.... all ammo tried.... terrible stock..... had to reload to get 1 inch groups..... and it's just plain 300 dollar truck/camp gun. People get a kick out of reminding me how bad Sako is too. I really felt I was getting something of quality... not so! Got a stainless Savage axis from Wholesale Sports {miss them} same summer, had to do something while customer support was helping me...lol Threw a Boyds thumbhole on it for weight the next year.... shoots everything and works every time, way more precise bolt and action. I think Sako dumped a bunch rejects on us back then... a lot of people say the same.... A7 sitting in the safe for years now because it dose not work and nobody will buy it.... not even gun shops on a trade....
 
I bought one, haven’t shot it yet,stainless 7mm rem mag, went straight to the gunsmith. Going to be a 26” 264 win mag, fluted light contour barrel, bought alum shroud and btm metal for it, going to get a wildcat stock as well
 
If I were after a high end action for a custom build it would be a custom action, didn’t want to build on another 700 action, didn’t want to do tikka, some 85’s have ejection issues, this thread is the first time I’ve heard anyone complain about that with an A7.

Just doing something different is all

Usually the ejection issue is the brass hitting the scope. I remeber working at Wholesale Sports when our "exsculsive" package came in with high rings. Never had any ejection issues from there, just some people needed a slip on cheek riser for the scope. I put one together for a friend of mine and the scope is on mediums, no issues yet.
 
I never changed nothing on my 3 Sako A7. Love them. Great rifles and very accurate Happy scope mounts are drilled and tapped. I learn a long time ago on a Parker Hale if you don’t want ejection problem, you need to chamber or eject a round with authority. If you go slow, your asking for problems. IMO
 
I have an A7 roughtech in 7 mag, and the only issue I have is with one mag that spit shells out for no reason (second mag is perfectly fine). I don't use it for paper, but the three 5 shot groups I shot last time out were all just under an inch, which I'm happy with. My scope is on high rings with a slip-on cheek pad, which could be the reason why I haven't noticed any ejection issues. I don't run the bolt with authority, but will definitely pay attention going forward.
 
Has the problem been resolved for the magazine issues and any case ejection problems for the A7 2019 models ? Also is the stock on the Roughtech Pro different than that on the A7 Synthetic ? Seems like the Synthetic is more of a rubberized stock . Thinking about the A7 Roughtech as a new purchase

Leavenworth, I have one of each, A7 soft touch and an A7 roughtech, the stocks are completely different..the soft touch I like a lot it's great for cold weather hunting with gloves on as the rubbery exterior gives great grip and doesnt feel cold on your cheek. The roughtec is a B&C or HS Precision stock I think. The exterior on it is more "sandpapery" than other B&C stocks I've had and it gives great grip and is the best fitting for me stock I've ever shouldered. Also has an aluminum bedding block and is a very accurate rifle.

Regarding ejection issues, my 300wsm fell prey to this until I swapped the factory supplies extra lows for mediums and never an issue after. The roughtec 270win no issues with low talleys on it.

I'd happily add more to my safe.
