Sako A7 problems with detachable magazine

Hello this is my first post, I hope I have the correct category. This summer I purchased a Sako A7, 7mm RM, replacing an old Tikka I gave/sold to my brother-in-law.

I have a problem with the Sako, when the bolt is drawn back and the magazine is full (3 cartridges), additional cartridges get ejected out of the action. The problem occurs a little less than 50% of the time. The magazine spring would seem to be under too much compression. This is without loading one in the chamber.

Looking at the top of a loaded magazine you can see the feed lips are spreading apart and just barely keeping the third round in the clip. If I carry the loaded clip in a jacket pocket for any length of time (while quading) I'm sure to find at least two rounds ejected.

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem, or does it sound like I've got a bad magazine? If it's a common problem is there a fix that can be easily made?

Now I've grown up always filling the magazine and hand loading one in the chamber, for this Sako 3 + 1. Is this a bad practice? After shooting the one in the chamber this gun will 99% of the time spit out two live rounds with the spent cartridge. Am I doing something wrong?

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Sounds like it could be a magazine problem.
Have you tried or compared yours to another mag?
Thats where I'd start, Plus contact who I bought it from as you may have a warrantable situation.

You don't need any more responses. Take the rifle back to where you bought it and have them order you another mag.........or talk to them first and maybe just bring in the mag.

Mine is chambered in 7mm.08 and I do not have this problem

Thank you for your comments, this is what I thought. I don't want to take it back to the store just yet, I still have a late season moose hunt and November deer. In case they want to send the whole rifle back.

I'm going by memory here, so I may be right out to lunch.... I seem to remember reading about someone with a similar problem. I think they resolved it by taking the magazine apart and they discovered that the spring was installed incorrectly (backwards or upside down?).

I just talked with the store owner about an hour ago. Personally he's not heard of A7 magazine issues but in his years dealing with Tikka, twice he's seen an issue with a backwards spring, that caused a similar issue. I will take the rifle in tomorrow. Thanks again, this is a fantastic forum, I wish I knew about it years ago.

i have the same problem on an a7 in 300 win mag i just bought. It is not a spring issue, and it has been a real problem getting it sorted out. What was outcome with your mag?

I wonder why the A7 has these problems... they have the metal feed lips which are supposed to make it better than the T-3 lite, which is is all-fibre construction.

(Personally I have never had ANY issues with my T3 mags, and I have several of them in different calibers).
I had an A7 as well that was fine too.
