Picked this up yesterday from P&D. 7mm Rem Mag, blued. Bushnell 6500 2.5x16x42 up top in Signature Z rings. Early signs are that it's going to be a good shooter.

Took it to the range today with some 140gr Sierra Game Kings 30 thou off the lands, 3 of each over RL22 65-66-67-68-69-70grains. Had my chrony 10-12 feet out front. Speeds MUCH lower than anticipated, may have to look for a different powder. By 70 grains, I believe I should be approaching 3200fps according to Lyman's book.

65-2775, 2781, 2744
66-did not shoot due to low velocity above, save for foulers/sighters
67-2844, 2856, 2871 2 touching with a big ole anticipation flinch pull
68-2876, 2905, 2886
69-2931, 2937, 2938 and a good group
70-3007, 2994, 3033

Recoil would be manageable for 10-12 shots or wearing a coat or pad, but after 18 rounds I was grunting and swearing after the shots. OW. Might look at a slipover Limbsaver or some such, tho I won't need it for hunting. Shooting off a front rest with rear bag, there was very little muzzle jump, which surprised me. I was able to reacquire target very quickly after most shots. I find the stock very comfortable, the pistol grip is very thin which works well for my 'average' hand size (I'm 6' 180lbs). Forend is somewhat flexible, but the floated barrel is well clear of the stock and I don't anticipate the flexibility being a problem.

Trigger is probably my only beef, feels like 5lbs or so, when they are supposed to be 2-4 and adjusted to 3 @ factory. Somewhat reluctant to pull it apart and adjust, I'll think about it for a couple days and decide. Definitely a tougher pull than I expected.

The action's very nice and smooth, fit and finish is as good as *I* need it to be, no obvious flaws or defects. The bluing is only so-so, looks faded in a few spots that polishing and a bit of oil won't bring back.

The 6500 is nice and clear and has the most relief of any scope *that I've tried* in it's class - more than a 4200, more than a Monarch, at least as much as a Conquest, haven't tried any of the Leupolds. Reticle is not superfine but not obtrusive. Didn't try out the DOA system yet, will do when I get an actual load down. I don't like that the DOA system is calibrated using maximum magnification, ie., at 16X....too soon to say how much of an issue that is, I'm OK using turret dialing but do like holdover too. I'm very satisfied with the 6500 in my experience so far.

Over all "bathroom scale" weight as rigged up but no ammo is 7.8 lbs, which for me who is used to heavy barrelled target guns, is very light indeed.

Still puzzled at the low speeds, will look at my manuals and maybe try what else I have on hand ie H4831SC or ?? Or redo my ladder (term used loosely) with the TTSX 140's that I ultimately intend to shoot.

Pretty low velocities, not uncommon when using published 7mm Remington Magnum data, so you might want to carefully increase and see if the groups shrink back together or not. In the end, high velocity probably doesn't matter much since you are using turrets anyway.

Load data from the Nosler manual is way inflated IMO. I find close to 200FPS less on most of their published data in calibers I've tried.
They list a max load of RL19 with a 160gr @ 3046FPS. I've tried that load in 3 different 7mm's & have found it to be in the 2800-2850FPS range.
No surprised with the recoil. That's a light rifle. Looks like it's starting to come together for you though.

Limbsaver makes a replacement pad for the A7 it is the same one as listed for the Tikka. I changed mine out and you won't believe the difference!

Just follow the instructions in the owners manual to adjust the trigger its pretty straight forward. I am not mechanically inclined at all and I was able to do it....

What is the COL you have loaded them to? Load up a few more and try 3.290" COL.

What would I hope to gain from that, 200 fps? (no, i know not, just being rhetorical sarcastic funny with no harm or insult intended) No fun in that, I like chasing the lands and working in small increments just out, as long as they will fit the mag.

Anyways, it's early days (first time shot in fact) wayyyy too soon for me to give up and go conventional  I'll chase a good load for many sessions on some rifles, this one looks like it will shoot well very early on :)

Well, I like the look of your 69 gr. load ! I assume you are getting no pressure sign ?

Of, the manuals I've just looked at ... Sierra, Nosler, Speer, none list a max load for
7mm Rem Mag with 140 gr bullets and RL-22 past 67.5 grains. And other than Nosler, which is often over-stated, like Wookie says, I'd expect something more in the 3000+
range from something like RL-19, IMR 4350/ H4350 or IMR 4831/H4831.

Of interest, you might want to give Hodgdon's Hybrid100V a try. It's between the burn rates of the 4350's and 4831's, meters really well and gives a velocity "bonus" (100 fps -the "100V" part of it's name ). It should be about ideal for the 7mm RemMag with 130's/140's, as should Winchester's Supreme 780.

Have you checked your chrony against anyone else's to verify concurrence ?

I had the chance to shoot an A7 in 30-06 a couple of weeks ago. No problem getting to 3/4 of an inch at 100 with Federal Premium factory 180's, and ringing the 8" gong at 300.
I did notice the recoil however! I would concur that the prefit Limbsaver is a good plan.

Playin' with new iron is always a pile of fun !

No worries for me...just wondering what the results would be.

Actually, I need to recheck my measurement to the lands, as the 140's at 3.290" would be WELL into the lands off last night's fast measurement, the ones I shot today were short. I just did some TTSX's @ 3.290 which, again theoretically, would be around 25 thou INTO the lands. I'll see how they chamber at the range tomorrow.

No pressure signs even at 70gr RL22 with the Game Kings.

No more shooting yet.....but the trigger was super easy to adjust, don't even have to remove the stock (as many of you will know). Allen key thru the magwell into the trigger group and turn counter-clockwise. Something like 3/4 of a turn took it from ~5lbs to ~3lbs. Testing for bump/slam fire on the cement garage floor, no problems.

Ya they sure are a nice trigger I sure am happy with mine.
