Looking at a Sako AV fibreclass chambered in 416 Remington magnum.

Any first hand opinions on this model Sako?

It would be an online purchase. ...gun looks good with some small marks on the stock...I believe Sako used a MacMillan on this model.

Opinions welcomed.

I just sold one in 30-06. The stocks are really nice and I like the fit and feel of them. Not sure I'd want to shoot one in 416 though.

Probably a pretty solid kick as the one I just sold was fairly light.

Excellent rifle and caliber! I purchased my Sako AV Hunter in .416 Rem. Mag. (then after several years of reliable heavy game stomping use got it converted to .458 Lott - just because :p ).

Handled one just like that which you are considering. Weighs less than my walnut stocked Hunter. That fiberglass stock had a crack which I thought was unusual for a Sako. Maybe it was fired in a Lead Sled or the like? Or maybe it was fired with the stock fasteners loose?

I have one on 375 HH that I bought new at such a good price at the time I could not resist.
I rechambered it to 375 AI and I love it.
Shoots like a lazer and no complaints. It has my old (then) Leupold 3-9 VariXII on it, and is a great rifle.

I have one in 375 as well. A repair was needed between the mag well and trigger as there was a small internal crack.
Recoil is pretty abusive in this 7.5lb scoped rifle. The factory pad is hard rubber. Shoots great.
416 rem? Do it!

Hunting with the .416 Rem. Mag. continues. Always wanted a fullstock .416 RM carbine so I got my .375 H&H Mag, Zastava fullstock carbine converted to .416 Rem. Mag. using the barrel from my Sako.

Capable of excellent accuracy with the right handload. Considerably more powerful than the .375 H&H Mag. With a 24" barrel it can fire a 300gr bullet at 3000 fps. Velocity loss with the 20" barrel is only about 100 fps.

I have a Fiberclass in 300 WM. Had it for over 30 years and is the best hunting rifle I've ever used. The only drawback is the hollow stock. If you knock a tree in the woods it makes that hollow sound. Other than that it handles, points and shoots very, very well. I dislike that "If you only had 1 hunting rifle" thought but if I had to this would be THE one.

These older factory McMillan stocked rifles are excellent value considering what it would cost you to buy and install a quality fibreglass stock these days. The Winchester Winlites and the Sako Fiberclasses are a couple that come to mind. Were there others?
