thinking about getting another rifle for moose hunting , not that i need one as i already have a 30-06 sako deluxe ,a marlin 1895 45-70 , and a j.c.hiigins 270 win. last year i was given by my late uncles estate a, sako deluxe 338 win mag.
i am thinking about selling the 338, its just too pretty to take to the woods with all our damp weather , it's like new condition.
Now i like sako's and never tried a winchester , but iv'e been looking for a kimber montana and can't seem to find one. the sako is almost twice the price as the winchester, was wondering what people who have them think about them , probably not the class as the sako , but with a little work it should make a nice accurate rifle. and with the , less expensive rifle can get much better optics.
it will be a sako finnlight 30-06 , or the model 70 extreme in 30-06 or in 338 win mag. do any one of you guys have one in 338 win mag that can give me a little imput on recoil. ? have had 338 win mag in the past , a remington custom ks in 338 that i shot a lot and didn't mind the recoil at all
regards
alan

I have an extreme weather in 300wm I did not like the original stock so I put it in a Boyd's stock, I don't have any problem with the recoil.and I usually find the 300 a little sharper than the338.

id buy a Winchester over a SAKO any day of the week but that's my personal feelings .

Me as well. Sako and also tikka feel cheap when in the hand. The stock aside the action feels cheap. I have a few m70's and a tikka I would take the Winchester all day every day. The sakis I have held and played with didn't feel any different then a tikka.

I asked a similar question as the o.p. in a poll and the response was overwhelmingly in favour of the Winchester. I bought the Winchester . Couldnt be happier.

I think you got a superior rifle with that choice. I have a few m70's and love them

M70 in a Mcmillan Edge stock....but in a 270Win. It will perform excellent for you on moose.

I would rethink what you have and get rid of some to upgrade the stock and get some decent optics for it. You have a fair bit of over lap going on so unless the rifles have some special meaning to you...sell them.

I think Sako builds a great rifle, but I prefer the winchester action. I like the three position safety on the bolt, and prefer the bolt lift of a two lug action. The sako may be a more accurate rifle but for hunting I prefer the winchester. It really comes down to a personal prefernece, shoulder them both and see how they fit you. Cycle the bolt, see how it all feels to you.

My choice this year was a Tikka T3x stainless synthetic and I’ve ordered a McMillan Edge stock for it. Tikkas shoot and I like the detach magazine plus the extractor they use.

I'm a sako guy all the way. Own two sako 85 ss synthetic in 308 and 300wsm. Very accurate. Both were bought to replace Remington model 700's.
I looked a Winchester and I think it just a matter of what feels good to u........both great rifles

I've given in to the forums over romanticized view of the m70 twice. Both times the rifle arrived, I was underwhelmed and quickly resold them. I respect the m70 and its followers - but they don't do it for me, at all.

That said, I prefer the earlier series of sako's to the 85 series (not that I have anything against the 85's).

M70 for me! I purchased a 300 WSM EW in 2009. Hunted hard with that rifle for 6 yrs, no issues. One of the best rifles I have owned, (should not have sold it!). The rifle fed and ejected better than any other rifle including a couple sakos that would not clear an empty. I just snagged a G series stainless classic 300 win mag from a fellow cgn er, great rifle. I will upgrade the stock with a mcmillian edge and cut the pipe to 24".

I think the sakis are way over priced for what you get....

You mean multiple action lengths appropriate for each cartridge size, integral bases, a 1-piece 3lug bolt known for smooth operation, the best/cleanest detachable mag system available on a hunting rifle, excellent triggers, and sako's reputation for accuracy? Yeah I hear you.

What he said, after owning several of each, not close to me.
