I have my first sako on the way... It is a finnlight in 30-06 and I was wondering on this particular rifle if anyone has the same or very similar and what height rings would u use with a leupold mark ar 3-9x40? I'm looking at either the leupold one pc ring/base or the optilock system. I am slightly concerned with the empty hull hitting the scope. All responses and advice would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!!

I just mounted a 30mm tube 50mm objective leupold on a sako 85 in talley stainless lows. No problems with ejection and looks great. I got mine from prophet river.

Have 5 sako's all with opti-locks.Use lows for sure, there solid and bore sight with almost no adjustment. The only draw back is the cost.

I don't mind the cost I they are the "best"... I was only worried about height due to empty hulls hitting the scope... But so far that's 2 ppl with similar or exact caliber and lows and no ejection issues... Thank u guys plz keep them coming

If you google search this topic alot you will find that many sako shooters dont consider optilocks the best. The talley system seems to get the best reviews in general. I have owned both and prefer the talleys. Optilocks have pretty soft screws and can strip and the height rating system is goofy. You could mount an 80mm spotting scope with optilock high rings. Talleys are about the same price and they match rifle finish nicely.

just my 2cents

I much prefer the Leupold Ringmounts to the Opti Locs. They attach to the dovetail without requiring bases, and they are just as strong as the Opti locs, for half the price.

+1 on this. What possible logic is there in designing a receiver with integral dovetails if you are then going to sell a scope mounting system that calls for separate bases to mount on the rails? The Leupold rings also allow the scope to mount significantly further forward, which can be handy if you have a long neck or your scope has extremely long eye relief.

Sako also sells (or sold) a set of ringmounts that attach directly to the integral receiver grooves, no bases required. I haven't seen them in years...don't know if they are still available. Much smarter idea, IMHO, than the base-and-ring sets.

I heard good things about the leupold one piece ring/base just don't know of anyone who has used them... I can get them for much cheaper than the optilock system... Rifle should be here tomorrow so maybe I'll take it to my local gun shop even though I know they only have the leupolds in "high". Might work out anyways.... Thanks keep em comin!

I have them on my hunter with a 3-9 x 40 Leupold. They're as low as you go and no 7mm-08 shells hit the scope...

I loved how my Finlight shot but ended up getting rid of it when I was unable to find a way to mount my favorite scope without having my brass hit my scope and fall back in the chamber. I sent it back to Sako to fix the problem-they couldn't seem to get it right. I had 3 gunsmiths look at it and a few gun shops and no one could help.In my opinion that action ejects at the wrong angle, it stands the case up more then to the side and this flaw is emphasized the faster you work the bolt. What a shame for such a nice shooting gun.

Your concern is valid. I have tried low rings, but with my Sakos I have always had issues with empty cartridges bouncing off the bottom of the scope and back into the receiver.
So I changed to medium height rings. And surprise surprise, the sako stock is made so that cheek-weld results in perfect eye-scope alignment with mediums and no more ejection problem.
If you want bases/rings that match the quality of your Sako rifle, then my recommendation is - do not compromise, pay a few bucks extra and use Optilocks. You wont regret it.
And yes, as a previous poster mentioned, the Optilock ringmounts were great, but unfortunately no longer available .. :/

BTW: if your Finnlight is in stainless and you do choose Optilocks, but develop a problem acquiring a matching set, then PM me as I have an extra set of new medium rings/bases in stainless.

Yes, I love Sakos. I have a few of them. lol.

Here's a couple pictures for reference. The first is Optiloks with xtra-low rings and the second is Leupold ring mounts in low - both are 40mm scopes.

I don't know why anyone would buy a "lightweight" rifle and put those heavy cumbersome looking optilocks on it.

Update!... I tried the leupolds however bc I am mounting the scope as far back as I could they don't seem to clamp onto the receiver tight even without torquing... I will probably be going with optilocks and xtra low rings

No problems with Leupold medium rings. (edit) Looking at one of the poster's image above I may have dropped some 'lows' on it - can't remember, but there's a very small gap at the front. I remember reading someone had trouble with the short mag cartridges hitting the scope but I've never had a 7mm-08 shell give me troubles.
