Sounds like it might be deluxe action but not original stock. AV deluxe has engraved floor plate, but stock is high gloss walnut with skip line checkering, contrasting forend tip and grip cap, bear head image on grip cap.

The only for sure thing about Sako, is that nothing is for sure. I have two Sako AV laminated stocks, both with Sako recoil pads. There have been multiple configurations of AV Deluxe rifles confirmed over the years. So, IMO, it is possible to have an AV Deluxe with a laminated stock. Check out the recoil pad and ensure that its a Sako pad. If the rest of the rifle checks out, and you like it, and the price is right, then get it. You won't be disappointed.

I would say that it is a stock switch for sure!! Have a fair bit of Sako knowledge and there was a Laminate model and a Deluxe. Never handled or heard of a Laminate with the high gloss blue and engraved floorplate!!

I've neve seen or heard of a Laminated deluxe Sako, but like someone else said, you can never be sure with Sako. Most likely a stock swap.

no laminates listed in 1982, or 1984 or 1985 ... first catalog I have with a laminate stock is 1989-90 (although don't have the 86,7,8 catalogs here) anyway .. no laminate "deluxe" listed. As others have said a deluxe will have the engraved floorplate and high gloss bluing etc ... although there was one other sako (that I am aware of) that had high gloss bluing like the deluxe and that was the Finnsport. Usually they came with oiled blond walnut and no engraving on the flooplate.

If the rifle identified has the better finish and engraving etc and only differs by the laminate stock -- it sounds pretty nice.
