Sako Handee

I took a rifle in trade at the last gun show, and not being a Sako guy, I need some info.
The seller had it shown as a Handee, it's a wood stocked 270 with about a 19 1/2 inch barrel and open sights.
I can't find any information on this model, is it an actual factory rifle or one that someboby cut to make it "handy"?
Any help would be appreciated, or a link to a sight with more info.

It's just a Mannlicher stocked Sako. They are not that uncommon.

Never heard them referred to as a "Handee", sounds like something he made up.

There's no reference anywhere on Sako's site to a "Handee"

Thanks, I thought it might have been a Mannlicher stocked rifle originally, it now has a conventional Monte Carlo stock.

Actually, SAKO did produce the Handi Rifle for a while. It was just as you describe it direct from the factory. The first ones I saw were in Juneau, Alaska, 375 H&Hs with iron sights, and were selling like hotcakes.

A friend of mine who guided in Hoonah bought one of them.

I too have seen at least one called a sako handy rifle (it too was in 375, and had a 18.5" pipe)- certainly not common around here.

Sako "HANDY" was listed in their 1986 catalogue - they all had 18 1/2 inch barrels and came in L579, L61R, L61R Mag (2 versions - 1 for 7RM/300WM & another version for 338WM/375H&H) and all the calibers those actions were normally chambered in
the L579 were also available with detachable magazines on "special order" .. all had open sights.

As already mentioned they were identical to the carbines ("mannlicher" stocked) except the Handy was stocked normally .... there was also a Handy available with the 270w length action and with the Fiberclass stock (special order again)

Friend of mine has one in 300 Win Mag. Nice looking, points well.

I must be getting old. I thought the model was called the Handi, not Handy Rifle.

Regardless, it was a neat "little gun in 375, and must be just a beast in 300 Mag.

With that short barrel, ya oughta be able to hear it. I think the .375 would be pleasant by comparison.

I found a fair deal on a new Sako "Carbine" (aka mannlicher) in .375H&H at the time the Handy was available ... its a little heavier but same OAL etc .. its not too bad with factory 270 loads but I have had excellent results with 235 Speer. Its a pretty good match to a similar Carbine in .243W I had purchased previously --- they shoot accurate enough. I dont think there is much that the pair cant handle ok.
