The rifle is a 22-250 and I need a set of 1 " rings that will fit the dovetail on the receiver. Can you suggest a set that would work? any makes and models and rough $ would be appreciated. Thanks 'smiths

Warne, Conetrol, Redfield did and Weaver made/makes bases that adapted the tapered Sako dovetail to weaver rings....Course you could keep an eye open for the Sako rings .. all versions are excellent and can occasionally be had used for around $80

L579

If you get tired of the trouble and all you could sell the 22-250 to me...

I am keeping an eye out for one just like yours but I posted to say the Sako rings are really the best choice even though others as mentioned certainly will fit. Sako rings will just fit up and stay true that little bit better. I like the older ones in plain black steel. I've been pleasantly surprised at how parallel to the barrel axis they are straight on. Kind to scopes, too.

Worth the money IMHO.

Have fun!

the best are Redfield bases that fit the Sako dovetail and allow you to use commonly available Redfield style rings..

IMHO, the Sako Optiloks are the heaviest and ugliest chunks of steel to ever desecrate the Sako dovetail...

The other really nice ones that fit the dovetail and give you the advantage of the plastic ring without the bulk is Burris signature rings and bases.

I have never understood the need to make a base that fits the dovetail and then make a ring to fit those bases when you can make a ring that attaches directly to the base... strong and simple..

good point Dennis but I think the Optiloka are overkill in the weight and bulk department...the Redfield setup is much cleaner IMHO...like this set on the AV Classic I recently sold.

I liked the Redfield set up (used them for years) until Leupold made their rings fit right on the dovetail... It is really a clean look... the new Sako mounts are pretty ugly and very heavy...

Ring-ring...

Redfields are worth a look and some of those Leupolds are fine--I use a few sets of those, too. On that 22-250 something like those lighter sets would be a nicer overall package, haffta admit...

Old-type Sako rings are just the ticket on classic Sako rifles of mid to large bore. I have 'em on a 338WM Deluxe and would on a nice 375H&H where that extra weight just adds to the goodness of it all. I've heard some folks say Sakos are big, heavy, ugly things to begin with--oh, well.

Kinda describes me, too.

I suppose these options would cease to exist if there weren't different preferences and all.

Cheers,

FM

Are these what you guys are talking about, I took them off a Sako? Allen screw missing to boot. Would sell cheap ;)

Ring-a-ding

Thinking of Randy's question I have seen some perfectly nice but used Leupold rings on eBay under $40 and sometimes nearer to $25. There's always a few more bucks to fork over for shipping but sometimes it still works out. Worth a look.

What somebody needs to make is a one piece picatinny rail that slides on the sako dovetails. I've been shooting Sako's for a number of years and the Sako Optilock rings are total junk imo.

Sako Rings & Bases

We have many good Rings/Base choices for a Sako as already mentioned here. I've used most of them over the last 40 years. On my hunting rifles I like Leupold the best for it's simplicity and Millet the least because of it's complexity.

Having said that I use Weaver bases on my competition Sako's. They are very strong and are the most versatile handling the many choices in Weaver/Picatinny style rings from various manufacturers. These bases use the Sako tapered dovetail. The bonus is they are the cheapest you can buy.

Sakoboy - If you need a one piece picatinny base for your Sako I suggest you contact Joe Dlask at www.dlaskarms.com

rings and bases

sakoboy is right with making a picatinny rail to fit to the dovetails as lm in the process of trying to do that with a set of bases l had ,and the top of the reciever is way to thin to thread into it doesnt leave you many options?

the top of the reciever is way to thin to thread into ?

How much thread do you need? I think it would easily hold a rail on with three 6 x 48 screws... I have seen a few old Sako's drilled and tapped for bases and they worked fine..

bases

well Dennis l would like to mill the reciever down to a flatter surface than whats there now as its a rough finnish and not suitable at all for any bases to sit flat and its 135 thous at this time so l figured since the dovetails are there l figure l could use them instead of tapping into the reciever and mount my picatinny rail on the bases

Utilizing the existing dovetail would be far superior but to be honest, a one piece base with a recoil shoulder against the front "ring" and epoxied on top with only two screws holding it down would work ...

...getting the front and rear dovetail to engage a one piece base will be a bit fiddly...
