Sako L579 needs rings

mmmmmmmmm

what l have done already Dennis to see the feasability of this was to tap the two buggered bases l had onto the dovetails till they were tight and {dont laugh}jb welded a weaver base onto the bases clamped them and let it sit for 2 days and then l could take the whole unit off in one peice, drill out the holes for the base set locking screws and then tap the rail onto the bases, but lm going to mill a good rail down for this and use it,its another brain fart or what tell me?

??

Sounds like a plan. Once you have all the dimensions of a completed one piece rail that slides on the Sako dovetails could you not then have one cut from a solid piece of steel or Alum in a CNC? I'm not a machinist so I'm kind of talking out of my a$$.

:runaway::runaway:

You may be able to save yourself a lot of work....as Gunster said ... Weaver made bases that slide onto the Sako dovetails ... of course because they are tapered you must use a pair .. as they are aluminum they stay pretty good if tapped on... and the "rough" stippling on the top of the sako dovetails helps to keep them there....plus recoil sets them in pretty good....not sure why you would want to mess with the receiver when these provide a good way to adapt the weaver style rings...these base/adapters shouldn't be that hard to find

Sako Bases

For those who might be interested, Weaver lists the following base numbers that fit the tapered dovetails on Sako rifles.

L579 Action - #72(rear) & #71(front)
Vixen, Forester & Finnbear Actions - #67(rear) & #65(front)
75 Action - #85 fits both front & rear

Weaver is fine and dandy for those who like it, and I'm talking about weaver as a style and not a manufacturer. But some of us use Picatinny and if you use Picatinny you know that it won’t fit in a weaver slot although a weaver crossbolt will fit into a Picatinny slot. I have one piece Picatinny rails on all of my rifles except for my Sako (all the others are Rem 700's) and I can switch scopes from one rifle to the next without any fuss or hassle. For example if I want to pull my Nightforce NXS off my 243 and throw it on my 300WM and go out for groundhogs:eek: then I do, and I'd like to be able to do that with my Sako.

I hate to say it because it's my pride and joy but I think I'll just sell my Sako and buy another Rem 700.

Picatinny for a Sako

Sakoboy, here is how to save your pride and joy by simply installing a picatinny base. Have a competent gunsmith drill and tap the flats of your action and install one of the following bases available from Brownells. They are flat on the bottom and will fit perfectly on your action. You will need the 5.7" base for the short and medium actions or the 12" cut to size for a long action.

Brownells Product #100-000-682
5.7" Picatinny Base Stock $28.16

Brownells Product #100-000-804
12" Picatinny Base Stock $56.42

Sako fans around the World are hoping you don't trade it for a Remington.
