Sako / M16 extractor on Rem 700 comprises strength?

Slightly off topic, but does anyone have a picture of a Remington 600/660/7/700 that came apart? I’ve collected a fair amount of pictures of “blown up” guns and actions off the internet but never been able to find one of a Remington 600/660/7/700.

My apologies to the OP for the hijack.

A plugged barrel has been blown but I have never seen a blown up 600/700 series action.

How in the ####... A .30 cal bullet made it all the way through a 7mm barrel?? Did it shear off the jacket on the outside of the bullet, or did it swage it down (Violently, lol) to 7mm?? That's almost unbelievable...

If I had not seen it I would find it hard to believe as well... but because the case was so fully supported by the 700 design, the bullet (.311") swaged down within it's own length, first through diameter of the neck and then the diameter of the bore (.284") I don't know of another bolt action that would survive that.

I remember reading in Hatchers Notebook, how the US army did a plethora of tests on actions. One of the tests was to instal a 270 barrel onto an action and cut the chamber for a 30-06 and fire a round. Hatcher notes that the 1903 action did not fair very well, but that the Japanese Arikisaka (sp?) action showed no signs of damage....

He theorized the same things as guntech, that the bullet swaged down to bore size, and other than a pressure spike, exited the barrel with very little fan-fare or excitement.

I have told before of a pair of Remington 700's which I barrelled. One was a 7mm STW and the other was a 308 Norma Mag. Perhaps predictably, a 308 Norma round was fired through the STW. The 180 grain Swift A-Frame went though the barrel and killed a decent-sized black bear. No follow-up shot was required which was a good thing since the bolt would not open.
When the rifle was brought in, I removed the barrel and pried the brass out of the chamber. The primer pocket was about 5/16" in diameter. The bolt nose had not expanded much because the barrel had been fitted with only .005" tolerance. The extractor was wreck though. I used a split bushing to reduce the bolt nose to it's original dimension, replaced the extractor and reassembled the rifle. Headspace was fine and the rifle worked as well as ever. They are strong and they are safe.
I have a 40x action in which I have installed a Sako-style extractor. I'm OK with it but have no doubt the system is compromised by this.
