Well I finally got around to getting the Sako out for some quality shooting. Shooting the original x-bullets.

.338 210 grain X-bullet
Winchester Large Rifle Primers
46 grains of H4895

Here's the results, the groups would be much smaller I can imagine...if I were a better shot  .

Here is a 100 yard 5 shot group..the top 3 were my first 3 and I can only assume the last 2 were my fault...er...no, it was the rifles:rolleyes:!!!!

Heres some 50 yard groups...the 3 that aren't connected with pen were fired by a friend...yah thats it...

Looks like minute of Moose to me!

How do you find the recoil?

Yah...it'd be tighter if I waddled my fat ass to the range more often..

Recoil is a bit stout, but I'm also a whimp behind the trigger. I had it loaded with 43 grains and the 210 x-bullet and that load was a pussy cat...but as Bartell so elocantly put it "what are you a pussy?" .

I don't find it any more stout than a .30-06/180 grain combo...

Mystery Powders....Bah.:bsFlag:

Nice thing about the Sako action, is you can seat them out a little further, giving you more room to play...:)

I've heard that it's pretty much impossible to match the ballistics of the factory ammo without pressure signs....something to do with a proprietary powder being used by federal for the .338 round...any truth to that?

WW

Im not sure myself. But Bartell was telling me he chronied his Sako .338F at 2650 fps with 47 grains of H4895, apparently he's able to do this because of the extra length of the Sako magazine (2.963"). But on Federals site they claim 2630 fps, but I assume they are NOT loading the bullets longer than the standard 2.820"....hmmm....40" barrels? :D

I think it's myth. I had no problem getting almost 3000 fps with 160gr TTSX, and 2650 fps with 210gr TSX with 47 grs H4895. Seating them out in the Sako mag (2.9ish") helps but I would expect not much less speed in a 2.8" load. H4895 was the powder to use in mine, except Benchmark with the 160gr TTSX

good shooting Archie, nice rifle

im shooting 210 gr barnes Originals (no longer made but got 3 boxes for 50 bucks). which are shorter than the partitions but not as pointed and have a solid base

and im faster than factory 210s with 46.8 gr of h335 behind them, could be over max but who knows as no load data for them

a tikka stainless lite mind you. . . not a sako

not a target load by any means, 4x scope makes it hard to paint under 1.5 inches

Not a target load maybe, but I bet it'd stop anything in front of it...

Are the originals shorter than the TSX?

yes much

copper less dense than lead
so bullet of same weight needs to be longer.
same thing happens with boat tails and higher bc bullets,
they carry less weight up front so they need more in the rear making them longer

my 210 barnes originals are just a touch longer 200 gr speers, as they dont have much of a point

as seen in below image barnes x 210 same length as nosler 250

338-bullets1.jpg

L-R) An array of .338 caliber bullets: (1) 200 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, (2) 210 gr Nosler Partition, (3) 210 gr Barnes X-Bullet, (4) 250 gr Nosler Partition, (5) 275 gr Swift A-Frame

thats why i picked them IMHO no need for premium bullets at these low impact velocities
