I've got a Sako 75 in 300WM that I've been wanting to turn into a 375 H&H for a while now. A guy at Stoeger said he could order an unstamped chrome moly barrel in the white and install it for about $400. Is that a reasonable price? How much would bluing cost afterward? Thanks!

For a factory Sako barrel, that's seems reasonable. Or is he talking about an aftermarket barrel?

I was going to say it's a factory barrel but he didn't actually specify. Just said that barrels can be ordered. It's Stoeger I'm dealing w/ so I assume it a Sako barrel but I'll have to confirm.

If I did go w/ an aftermarket barrel, where's the best place to buy? I checked out Gaillard but he only seems to have stainless.

I'm sure the Canadian barrel-makers do excellent work, but the wait time is probably 5x that of an American company. I know Pac-nor ships to Canada, and they told me 8 weeks to get a barrel. Not sure about others like Hart Barrels or Douglas. You'd have to contact them.

If you could stick with a Sako factory barrel though, I would think your gun would retain more value, rather than with an aftermarket.

I have had a bunch of rifles, barrels and parts blued over the years. I always prep the stuff so its ready to blue no polishing needed, but a prepared barrel usually costs around $30 in Edmonton. Ron Smith makes excellent barrels here in Alberta, and Bevan King in BC has always been super quick to make and ship me barrels.

I'm awaiting a reply from Stoeger on some contact #'s and what the ETA is for the barrel. If it's reasonable, I'll stick w/ them.

Ron Smith was actually my first choice to rebore the 300WM to 375H&H but he won't rebore Sakos. Said the steel tears rather than cuts.

Any contact info for Bevan King? Thanks!

I think you will have trouble finding anyone to rebore it. Most say Sako's barrels are too hard. Bevan doesnt rebore any...only new barrels, and although he has always gave me a fast turn a round I hear he is now semi-retired. You may want to use the search option and type in "Canadian barrel makers contact info"

I purchased a 264 WMag barrel from Stoeger years ago ... still NIW ... it was stamped "Sako" and calibre etc. Don't know if the factory sells them unstamped (but then again my experience was years ago)

RE: BRNO barrels being too hard to rebore - I wonder if that is the reason or the fact that they are hammer forged (like Sako) and the bore surface gets differentially hardened... just curious and certainly not an expert on metallurgy

Just got off the phone w/ Stoeger and the ETA is unknown. All they can do is place the order and wait....and it could be a long one.

I've got one possible lead on a factory barrel and lots of after market options so I'm not sure what I'm going to do! :runaway:

Thanks for the feedback!

There are a few gunsmiths that will rebore the stainless Sako barrles not the chromemoly ones-too HARD. I too looked into a rebore of factory Sako m75 barrel and that s what I was told. Now I'm just going to get a aftermarket barrel match grade for about $650 installed even though I could of used the factory barrel.
