Looking to buy a Sako 85 Hunter. Want to mount a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 or a Leopold Mark 4 scope - both options are 30mm.

What ring options do I have?
What is the best option in your opinion?

Do not want to have removable rings.

Thanks.

I have Talley lightweights on a Tikka, and really like them. I know Talley makes a good selection of 30mm rings, including ones that will fit the T3... not sure if the same ones fit Sako, or if they make others that will fit. If they are available, I would suggest you put them on your consideration list.

I have had several Sako's and have used Leupold, Millet, optiloks and Burris Signature rings and bases. The Leupold and Millet I will not use again, the optiloks are good, but if you have a scope with a big eyepiece and long eye relief the base can get in the way, the Burris signature rings and bases designed for Sako rifles are excellent, about 2/3 the weight of the optiloks, no eyepiece issues.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to put one of the great big honking scopes on a nice lightweight rifle like the 85 Hunter? Seems out of place.

I use Leupold on my 85, they hold up fine so far. Sako makes an Optilok that attaches directly to dovetail, looks good..I think they're not very available in Canada though

if you want to add between a quarter and a half pound to your rifle use the Optiloks....I use Leupold on my 85 260 and the 75 22-250 and Redfield style made by Burrris on my 75 6.5..I've used the old style Sako windage adjustable rings on other Sakos, have an extra set sitting here now. I won't use Optiloks simply because of the weight, unless they were going on a heavy barrel custom rig where weight is not an issue and sometimes more is better......but they look strong....a quarter pound of steel plus had better be strong...:D

Go with the Sako Optilok bases and rings for a 30mm scope. Or if you are lucky like I was when Corlanes built my Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06AI that I picked up at the end of October.....the Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 scope was mounted in the new style of Sako Optilok rings with no bases required. And as todbartell mentioned...hard to find.

I have a set on my Sako 85.
I just prefered the look over the ring/base ones.

I got a set of stainless ones from Corlanes about 2 weeks ago.

Just a warning..they arent cheap.

I am going to replace the 2 piece optiloks on my 85 with the one piece ones when I find them.....that's a big if ;)

Going to buy a 270 Win unless I change my mind and or can find a 308. May pick up a 300 win mag. Trouble with right now is the only limited options in the stores are beat up stuff that nobody else wanted. If I wait a couple months the next years batch will be very expensive due to the dollar. However the steel scare would be a thing of the past with Sako. Buy one off the shelves today can I be sure that I am not getting a dud?

The Nightforce is 19 oz - thats not really heavy. Easily click adjust and something I can beat up is what I'm looking for in a scope.

Thanks for the responses.

I got mine from Corlanes about 2 weeks ago. Have them sitting on my bench ready to go for when I get my scope.

Think it was bout $180 +/- $5 shipped to my house in Calgary.

Definately a bit of a shock since I'm used to buying Talleys for about $65.

Harv - I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of your new Edge on your 85.

How is anyone getting an EDGE for an 85? McMillan told me they would not inlet for an 85 unless you ship them the rifle, in Arizona...

Normally that is true but they have the exact same gun in right now as mine so they are going to use it to make my stock....otherwise you do have to send them the rifle for a Sako 85 stock.

I can't wait to get it back...went with the Sako Hunter style of stock for it with the Edge fill. :D :stirthepot2:
