I'm not a wood guy and my hunting rifle needs some tlc, nothing serious, just a little rub perhaps. After the season the wood seemed to have absorbed a little moisture and appeared faded and soft. Its an AII with what I would call a stained satin finish. It looks good now but I want to protect it.

What product / proceedure should I use?

Cheers,
Rob

Sure it's not Oil? When I was running an AV I had a McMillan stock for sloppy weather and the very nice walnut oil finished stock for the rest of the time.

I was thinking oil stain but I suppose there is no need for color so that would make it an oil finish wouldn't it. The last thing I oiled was a 410 break action stock and it looks great but darkened considerably, used Tung oil.

Strip the stock of the existing finish and rub in several coats of pure tung oil with 24 hours between coats. Takes several days. The more you rub in, the shinier the resulting finish. Tung oil gives a hard, waterproof, finish. You'll have to seal the barrel channel as well. Any wood sealer will do for that.
