Sako TRG 22 in 308 1500Yds

Hi guys,

I would like to hit better than a pie plate at 1500yards with my trg. Has anyone got any solid reloading experience with a TRG? I'm looking for a new recipe. Ive used VV and Varget, 155 scenar has become my standby. I use only lapua brass and federal 210 primers. wilson dies. seating depth is within a thousandth to suite my barrel. The only thing I have not been able to measure or account for is neck size. I know its a factory chamber which is "no turn" but really!!! really!! there has to be a method to measure for my case neck.. Please don't tell me to have a custom tight neck barrel made I know its out there. My best day is 2.5" at 1000yds. that was a single occasion a long time ago. I'm consistent with 5"ish at 1000yds providing I preform all my calculations on location same day. I have not been able to improve on it. so my next goal is a pie plate at 1500.

5"ish at 1000 yards would win a Provincial Championship for sure, and would put you right at the top of the leader board at any National or World Championship. Not bad for a factory rifle.
Come out to the Mons Club Championship and the Fall Palma in Borden on Oct 9-10.
 
Actually, measuring the neck is pretty easy. Measue a loaded round, then measure a fired one. The difference in size plus .001, is the diameter of the neck in your barrel. From there you can get a bushing die so that you have about .002 tension on the loaded bullet, you need to neck it down .003 from fired size. This assumes that neck sizing it .003 still gives you adequate grip.

If that doesn't work then the only cure is thicker brass in the neck, or a custom re-barrel with a tighter neck, which you don't want to do. As others have said however, if you are consistently getting 5" out of a factory barrel, I would be happily entering every shootin contest I could find. Most custom barrels won't shoot that tight.
 
Is the BC of .508 good enough to get you there in the first place? You will be dropping out under 1000 FPS when you hit 1100M..what happens to the bullet flight then? Flip a coin to see if it flies straight.......

I think the bullet itself will not let you do it. Hit the Target yes... Consistent 'Pie Plate', No.
 
If you wanted to know exactly without question what your chamber/neck size is in your rifle you can get a chamber cast done and measure it.

  • It's Lawrence Avenue and Finch Avenue...
  • from Lawrence to Finch is about 6.2km which is about 6500 yds...
  • and last unless you have bullets that somehow rise and fall there would be little chance you'd find the intended target..
However it sucks that the ORA intro day is the 16th... I probably won't be back to Ontario until then.. and between the jet lag and that my wife will probably not want another day of driving it won't happen... Will have to come out with my savage to try something longer then 100 yds later..

Yea, right!! 5" group? I shoot 1000 yards out west here, and in 25 years I have yet to meet a consistent 5" group shooter. Once in a while a 5" group or even slightly less, but consistently? I'm waving the BS flag on this one. Eagleye.

I'm sure that some of the folks from the ORA could confirm or deny this... years ago.. I could shoot reasonably consistent 12" groups at 800 yards... But I'm pretty sure that's no spectacular feat.. I have no idea what 20 years and 100lbs have done to that since I'm not able to shoot anything other then 100 yards these days

a) is asking for basic advice on an internet forum (rather than hosting his own blog and dispensing wisdom to the rest of us).

b) is inexperienced enough about basic reloading to think that one guy's experience with his personal TRG is going to yield universal secrets for other TRGs:

("Has anyone got any solid reloading experience with a TRG? I'm looking for a new recipe.")


c) is not well known on the world competitive stage.

d) is still using the factory barrel on his TRG (most serious competitive shooters I know burn through a barrel in a year or maybe two at the most).

e) does not understand the basic limitations of the .308 cartridge. There's no way you can keep it supersonic for anywhere near 1,500 yards. My friend Mirko Teglasi of Australia (who incidentally is ranked #2 in the world and is a member of the Canadian Palma team) has done some amazing things out to 1,200 yards with a .308, and his wife shoots in benchrest .308 matches at 1,200 with heavy (208 grain +) bullets and a fast twist barrel. The consensus is that you just can't get consistent performance out of a .308 past 1,200, and even then, you're really pushing it.

With that kind of consistent shooting I'm sure you could get Taliban Jack or Count Iggy to hold that pie plate for you. Wendy might even offer to pull the trigger after a lesson or two from you.
 
If you woosies can't hit a pie plate a 1500 yards you should take up knitting. :p:D
