So, I have been wanting to make up some cast bullet loads for my 458 Win Mag. I have assorted fired 7mm Rem Mag brass that I do not use, so thought I would try my hand at blowing them out.
First step, just completed, was to anneal the necks and shoulders. After reviewing lots of internet discussion about this, I decided to go with the salt bath annealing system from Ballistic Recreations. If it actually worked, (i.e. if the brass actually annealed), that system is just too easy!!. Got a Lee Precision melter from Cabela's. Got the salt bath kit from Ballistic Recreations website. Downloaded a metronome for my iPhone. Heated to 505 C and started feeding cases into it - 5 seconds soak, tap out a drip and drop in bucket of room temperature water. Very slick! Temperature dropped down to 495C after about 20 cases - just stopped for a couple minutes so it could recover and then resumed. Excellent written instructions with the kit; same as their on-line videos.
My next step is to get the case dried, then load them up with some Green Dot and Cream of Wheat and fire them off. No idea if they will be fully to spec for 458 Win, but i guess I will find out.
