Can someone point me to a credible source that indicates salt licks are LEGAL to use for moose hunting in Ontario. Some guy behind me in line today at TSC raised a stink that I was buying them for moose hunting. Said it was illegal and if they were legal everyone would use them.

My understanding is that once upon a time they were illegal but have since been legalized for use in moose hunting. Before I go using them, would appreciate some guidance with respect to legality (bearing in mind differences in provincial regulations, in speaking strictly ONTARIO).

Thank you

Last i checked the only thing you couldnt bait in Ontario was wild turkey. But check the regs online to be sure as I am no c/o.

You will likely have better results next season after the minerals have melted into the ground.
Legal or otherwise in your province I have no idea but, having placed numbers of licks over the years has always had a better yield of activity.
Read the regs a couple of times and read again in case you missed it the first time.

We’ve been using them for at least 5 years already, I’m just never the one who’s been the one in charge of buying them so it’s the first time it’s come up. Always thought it was legal until this guy raised such a stink, and it made me want to go back and check again.

Couldn’t find anything in the regs that said it was prohibited.

Thanks everyone for your help!!

Word of mouth advice, and even hunting guides, cannot be relied upon for legalities. Always look to the governing Act and regulations.

I had a quick look myself, and couldn't see anything relevant to salt licks.

I did the same. Opened up the 2019 regs in PDF and did a search for “bait” “attract” “salt” and while restrictions came up for how you can bait bear, being unable to bait turkey, and limits on natural scents for deer, nothing for moose.

There's no regulation that says you can't use salt licks for Deer and Moose. We're no longer allowed to use urine drips or sprays unless it's artificial.
