SAM 1911 Commander 9mm flinging brass in my face

i had this concern with my norc 9mm...got a spare ejector played with the angle and also changed out the recoil spring to a heavier one ..took some messing but finally got the right spring/ angle now is reliable

i spent time on two sams, playing with the ejectors and extractors. My experience (and working fix) is that the stock springs are weak. The slide speed is too high with factory ammo. Bone stock, both guns would eject fine with lower power ammo. Putting in new springs corrected 6 o’clock ejection with higher power loads.

9mm SAMs? I assume you are talking recoil spring? What weight did you change over to?

I was shooting reloads. 147gn LRN loaded at tad on the hot side.

10# progressive, and a 23# mainspring.

I had my SAM out last night. I still haven't tweaked the ejector. But It ejects anywheres from 3 to 6.

Sorry, I don’t remember the weight. Whatever was recommended for 9mm. Also on my sam titan in 45, a factory kimber captured spring fixed the 6 o’clock ejection.

I have the Commander length Sam in 9mm. Had the same issue with brass in the face. I tested the recoil spring, it was 10lbs and I think under sprung. I switched to a 13 lbs recoil spring (Wolf) and the brass now falls about 4 feet to my right in the 4 o'clock position. No other changes were required. I think the guns are very lightly sprung stock and function better with a heaver recoil spring.

Every time I see a post like this and the first advice is change the recoil spring in a new gun, is just silly. The pistol is ejecting the spent cases, their just not going right and back. As stated by Edojan you have a minor problem with the ejector or extractor. Surf the net and you'll find multi photos of how these parts should look and how to fit them. Bet two minutes with a file will smarten this pistol right up.

Judging by most of the other post maybe I'm not so "silly" after all. Springs affect timing and feeding and ejection is based on the timing of the slide moving.

Oh yeah we're talking Sam here no guaranty it came with a proper weight recoil spring to start with. Again the pistols ejecting, it's just not ejecting properly that screams ejector.

Yeah.. I used to be the one swapping springs right off the batt... realize it caused to much issues. I still haven't tuned my ejector yet. But the ejection was much better with the 10# recoil and 23# main.

SAM were known for having light springs in from factory and ejector issues. 2 commanders Ive shot, all mangle cases.

My SAM commander (.45) used to eject the brass at my face as well. Add to that deformed cases from contact with the slide. I changed to an 18lbs Wolff recoil spring and it improved dramatically. I have since tuned the extractor and, for the most part, my brass lands around the 5 o’clock position. I will be replacing the ejector with an extended one so I can fine tune the ejection to between 3 and 4 o’clock. But it’s not a pressing matter as I’m not getting hit in the head anymore.

Finally got a chance to shoot my new SAM 1911 Commander 9mm today. It ejects the empties directly into my face. They were pinging off my forehead, glasses, cheek, you name it. Is there a tweak for eliminating this behavior?

Thanks,

M

Might have to take a little material off your ejector face. Field strip your gun and measure the OAL ( over-all length ) of your ejector. It might need some material filed off the face of the ejector finger ( the part that actually hits the casing ). If the brass is hitting you in the face, it could be that the ejector is too long, or maybe too short. The only other type of fix for this would be a heavier recoil spring, but that could cause problems with chambering and extraction if the spring is too strong.

Good luck with this.
