I have been debating picking one of these up and have been reading the reviews, which seem favourable. Seems everyone is using 230 grain fmj's in them but has anyone used semi wad cutters or hollow points in them? Do they feed or jam? I normally use 200 grn. semi wad cutters in my other 1911's.

And the dovetail sizes for the sights, are they a proprietary size or can I swap out sights with out having to re cut them?

I don't own one but have heard good things, if you are looking for a non-norinco in that price range I have heard good things about Reagent too...

I used some 200gr JHPs in one. In general any 1911 may or may not need work to operate reliably with non RN bullets that is just the nature of the gun. The work is easy to do though.

I have a SAM Commander-E coming in the next day or so,just got the Transfer Notification in the mail and under Make it says PAC not SAM..anyone know what PAC stands for???
I plan on re-loading 200 grain hard lead semi wad cutters and hope that this gun will work with them. I am currently using the same bullet in an 1873 SAA Clone and they make a nice easy to see hole in the paper.
If the gun shows up in time I will do a range report on Monday,I can also measure the dovetail for the sights.

That would be great!! thanks! I don't care about doing any mods to make it work, but was wondering if it will feed them out of the box.

Anybody else have some experience with these SAMs? I just popped into my local store to take a look at the 1911A1 Norinco, he also had a SAM. The SAM looks very nice on the outside.. but is it as good?

Sgt.RazorBurn... I suspect your local store is here in Edmonton.

I bought one, the Commander edition and have shot about 600 rounds through it. I really enjoy it, nice solid gun at a great price.

Much nicer than the Norinco (IMO).

P.S. I hear they are increasing in price soon.

Sorry, I don't own a SAM 1911. But I have run 500-600 semi wad cutters through my colt 1911 and never had any issues. I've not heard of the 1911 not liking them so i'm interested. Not to derail...

Some of the 1911's that are built how mister Browning designed it, are designed to use fmj 230 grain round nose... or ball ammo. These 1911's hate anything other than ball. The 1911's in the last 20 years or so have had the feed ramp altered so they would feed other rounds, hollow points, semi wad cutters and so on. And thanks to Mikeyman we have found out that the feed ramp on the SAM has been altered. Not a big deal but one less job to do.

I purchased 500 rounds of Remington AMMO with the SAM.

I shot about 400 of those before I started reloading my own. Now I've shot about 200 of my own reloads.

I'm using a 230grn Berry's bullet with 4.3grn of Titegroup. Much less poop than the Remington ammo. Gun still cycles fine and is accurate though.

Just got my SAM Commander-E and I am impressed, very nice matte black finish..no rough edges... very good looking gun. The magazine appears to be good quality and fits perfectly.
I am going to test it out on the weekend along with my Colt 1911 which has a new barrel which I am tweaking to get it to feed reliably.

My wifes SAM 9mm, very nice gun...extremely tight tolerances. I also have a 1911 Norinco in .45 and i would say the SAM is 10 times the gun for quality of workmanship.
