SAM Commander Tactical...issues?

Well, had it out again over the past weekend and other than two stoppages due to limp writing by my nephew, the gun ran flawlessly. We put about another 100 rounds of 200gr SWC reloads through it and I didn't have any hiccups with the gun. And it's darn accurate too.

I can see the problems with your nephew's grip from the picture. That will give him even more problems when he goes to a heavier caliber. His strong thumb should ride the safety on a 1911 and his weak thumb should stretch out to just in frot of the slide lock. About a gazillion people (myself included) learned their grip from Todd Jarret in this video. I know I did even before I got my first gun and it's second nature now. Todd is a great coach and will help your nephew and gun shine!!

Yeah, my nephew needs some work with technique! I tried correcting his grip a la your description, but he tends to go back to what you see in the picture. On a humourous note, he is (like most teenage boys these days, it seems) a gamer and is somewhat taken aback that guns in the real world are not as easy to master as they are in the virtual worlds of COD etc.!

I've taken my grandsons including one at eight years old. I just love the look you get the first time the gun goes "bang". I started mine and even the young girl friend of one of them on a .22 but then let them work up all the way to a .45 ACP. With the larger caliber guns they get one round at a time.

Last year this young lady of about 17 and 80 pounds soaking wet had a great time. The AR -15 gets a great reaction too. This girl is French speaking as are my grandsons and quite timid. In any case she did get up enough courage to ask for a second chance. When I asked "which one" she came back quickly in French with "the big one!"

I think that firearms are a great way to teach our young so many valuable skills and attitudes. It's a character developer and also gives us old geezers a chance to stay connected with the youngsters. My kids think I'm pretty "cool". I don't argue.. How many ways are there for a 71 year old man to hang with and have fun with his grandchildren and earn their respect?

Actually the commanders have ~4mm less travel. If you measure the slides locked back of a full size govt model and commander you will see the difference.
Less travel = faster cycle rate.

Commanders need normally 18# recoil springs, and decent mages to operate reliably. Thats why with most commanders, finding brass is kind of hide and seek sometimes, as brass doesn't drop in a nice little area.

Is there a specific manufacturer that you are referring to? We measured action travel on several 1911's owned by various club members and the commander and government models all had the same slide travel(different slide.barrel lengths, but, the same travel). None of the commanders had a shorter slide travel than the governments.
