SAM Omega 6 .40 First Impressions/100 Round Review

My mag. won't feed reliable, either. I don't think I got two mags in a row, to function without a FTF. And that's with only 5rds. loaded.
My Spartan and Dlask .45 mags would function 100%, when loaded with 5 rds., but not when fully loaded.
In all honesty, my Norinco 29 and .45 Sport have a better finish, nicely blued. And the fit is about equal.
Accuracy of the S.A.M. is very good, but the trigger pull could be a little better.
Overall, I am very happy with it, once I get this mag problem worked out.

Speaking of the mag, it is just a standard mec-gar 8 round mag, you know the useless ones that dont come apart because the base pad is welded on.

They can be disassembled easily....

Thanks for the review. I should be getting mine next week. Will make sure to bring along different 1911 mags with me for testing.

base plate is still attached, so that doesn't count as disassembled because I cant run a brush through it to clean out all the crap at the range between stages.

Trebor , the Spartan issue may be your mags as well, I have never seen DLASK mags run well

yep, tripp mags are all I use in my Spartan, gun great but my ones in .40 haven't shown up yet. Still I think most people will expect a gun with the factory mag and factory ammo to run and mine just didn't, at all. Still, good base for my classic gun and it was going to the smith for work anyways so a little extra massaging isn't a big deal. We will see if the chamber needs work for longer loads as well.

I spent lots of time this summer trying to get my Delta Elite to run with the .40 S&W barrel. Had very similar stoppages to what you described. I had been loading long because that is what all the cool kids were doing on the forums where I did my research. Had the barrel throated to accept the longer loads. I even installed an EGW elevated mag catch that helped some. Wasn't till I ran some 1.135 COAL ammo that I realized the gun and mag combination likes that length.
Needless to say I have data for a bunch of major loads that don't cycle very well. I did learn something along the way. Hope you figure out your setup.

Well I thought I would post an update, I dragged out some ammo loaded long for a standard div gun and jammed it into the mag. I could only get 3 or 4 in because the loads are longer than normal for .40 but they all fed like a dream. Happily Tripp knows that this is how people with 1911s shoot .40 and all the system mags are 10mm sized for us.

Had mine out to the range today. A lot of my FTFs, the cartridge stood up in the ejection port, or jammed up high between the top of the barrel and the slide.
I noticed the frame just below the bottom edge of the barrel taper stands proud. I am not sure if this is the case with the slide closed, but is certainly appears that way with the slide pulled back and locked. I believe the cartridge gets pushed too far upward and gets jammed.
At least i know what to get fixed when i send it out for trigger work.
I am surprised how poor this gun runs out of the box.

With any 1911, majority of feeding issues are mag related. Other issue with .40 is the tc bullet profiles are not ideal for 1911's either. Good mags are the first thing you should try.

mine works great with the stock Mecgar mag, the 3 aftermarket mags that I got with it need tweaking on the top of the slot for the mag catch. Tried the Dlask .45acp 8rd mags and had feed issues. I fired without problem TC, SWC cast, 4 different JHP including a couple of 155gr XTP

Neither the stock Mecgar or the two stainless ones I bought worked worth a damn.

I tried pinching the lips in a bit because the bullet end presented high. That didn't help.

I think it has more to do with the feedramp on the frame on my gun. It is proud of the barrel ramp, so the cartridge has no choice but to feed high.

First time at the range tonight with mine. Stock mag would not feed reliably with a few different types of ammo. My best results (but still not 100%) were with the cheapo ACT .45 mags. Out of the ammo I took, plated Berry's 180's fed well and were accurate. I managed a rested 1.5" group at 15yd that I was unable to repeat . I've owned Norc's, Paras and STI's and I think these SAM pistols are a great value even at full price.

Any luck on the front and rear sight upgrade. I am interested to hear what you found.
Thanks.

I haven't gotten to it yet (been lazy since my Spartan works and busy with other things) but I did confirm with wolverine that the sights have a novak dovetail so I would simply contact freedom ventures and order a set of Spartan front and rears for it, and while your smith is installing them have him mill out the center post on the front sight, I took a file to mine 10k rounds ago with no adverse effects

I went with a fibre optic front sight (0.017" high) from Fusion and a low mount Heinie rear. This combo works well for me:

Does any one have a picture with a full size 1911 (preferably STI) with the 10 round 40 cal tripp mag; how long do these extend past the grip? I want a 1911 single stack in 40 cal with 10 round mags that will fit into the ipsc "box" for standard class.
