Thought id write a story about a hunt i had this morning.
It was a late start to the day, sunrise is about 6 an i got to the hunting area at around 6:45, it was one of them hunts that i was half an hour into an thought WTF am i wasting my time walkin around here...
a spot i like to hunt an not many others do due to the terrain, i know there is stags around as iv had the trail cam in there a few times.
Anyway about an hour into the hunt i stopped to look over a steep black berry choked gulley that was still semi shaded by te ridges, i also needed to re apply some nasal spray for my hayfever condition which was ok but while i waited i thought it would be a good idea...
I glassed high an low an seen nothing so decided to start hiking back up toward the ridge when i spotted a Sambar hind about 200m out.. beauty!
i glassed her for a few minutes as she fed uninterupted an then i lost her from the trees, i sat an waited incase she would reappear when from the same spot a younger calf fed out toward her... AWESOME!
i glassed for another 10-15minutes an took some photos through my binocular as i only carry my mobile phone(cell) with me.. that was all good an i noted where they had fed off over the ridge..
Havin chosen to take the old winchester 94 with me i had to stalk my way in closer than 100m for me to take a shot, i stalked an stalked across the steep gulley face an popped up over the ridge where id last seen them. the wind was uneasy an i chose to go where my instinct told me they may have gone.
It was not 30 meters from the ridge when the two deer had seen me an took off in differnt directions, i second guessed which one to shoot an missed my oppertunity, or so i thought.. an instead of sitting tight i walked 2 paces when a almighty HONK burst out... DAMMIT rifle shoouldered an i picked out the fleeing hinds backside, BOOM the .375win roared as the deer bolted...
I checked for blood or hair an found nothing, so i walked in the direction it took off only to have the calf take off from the thick almost inpenetrable scrub... i listened an only heard deer crash off so i pronounced the hunt Over...
It was a great hunt in the end, although no meat today, an the little levergun still goes deerless... had i of had my 35whelen with me it may be a different story but thats stalking for you an my mission is to get the lever a sambar deer this summer.
alot of lessons learnt which is never a bad thing.
heres a few pics from the hunt, nothing great, i tested the use of blaze orange hat an the deer never looked at me so im now happy that it wont give me away in the bush.
Until next time.. shoot straight an have fun!
