Sambar hunting talk Why the .35Whelen

I finished my Whelen last year. Stainless Rem700 action, KS Arms medium contour barrel, 1:12 twist, cut to 22", Timmy Elite trigger, McMillan Edge stock, topped with a Swarovski Z3 3-10X42 with BRH reticle. Ran the ballistics program for the Remington 200 grain Core-Lokt and I can reach out to 500 metres very comfortably. So far my hunting shots with a 35 have been under 100 metres but each has dropped deer and elk on the spot with no need for a follow up shot. I love the 35. Tempted to have my Sako Bavarian 30-06 converted to 35.

Got a Ruger M77 in 35W. Had a 7600 carbine, but sent it to a new home.

Still looking for something worthy to shoot with the Ruger though.

great video. was wondering if it will have been easier to go the 9.3x62 in the down under land? your tikka in the past can have been tammed with the choice of a different recoil pad and laminate stock from boyds.

Yeah thats right, there is proberly more 9.3 options in rifles, an even ammo options these days......... but not my cup of tea in the light 9.3 i had haha..... recoil pad would be a bit nicer but the fact its burnin so much powder an throwin such big pills out of such a light chassis, isnt for me :)

all good though, nice to have the ol whelen still. sentimental now.

Im tossing up between the Parent or the Big Brother for an upcoming Guided hunt for 3 days on the back of Private land with a bloke who hasnt shot a Sambar yet....
hes mentioned he will have a 7 rem mag an 175gr SP rounds, with a limit of 250 meters......

I know we wont be doing big miles as he is approx 50 year old with a reasonably bung knee... sounds like as perfect opertunity to run the Ruger .35 Whelen in hopes of a Back up shot for some insurance :) i'll no doubt have a Camera in my hand so not sure how much backing up ill be doing ha ha-- its not as though its goin to come an charge us :p

failing this the 30-06 is ever-so-ready for this kind of task...

HMM. PRIMERS are non existant in local stores, lucky i have approx 400 -+ in my stash, an enough loaded rounds for the other Guns, just means i proberly wont be developing no loads for the Whelen any time soon once these dozen are fired--

Theres more Whelens around gathering dust in aus than there is for sale, thats for certain. it did have its day on the deer back a while ago... now it is all magnum stuff lol.... also gathering dust

I love mine! It's hard to find factory rifles and loads nowadays but IRG was able to get me the CVA and I've been in love with the Whelen ever since.
