How many of you buy big game rifles, perhaps one or two a year - or even more, but when hunting season comes around, you end up taking the same old gun as always because you just can't leave it in the safe?

Or am I out to lunch on this?

I'll admit, I have gone through 192 rifles/shotguns/pistols in the last 25 months. (counted the stack of certificates) and I still end up taking my same 2 rifles. (ruger hawkeye .270win stainless with green hogue overmold stock) and my Howa ss/hogue O.M. black stock in .300wm, as I KNOW these are accurate, reliable, and they both fit me to a tee.
The others, I constantly buy/sell , because in the quest for the perfect rifle, unless you have actually TRIED THEM ALL, you cannot truly say you are using the best.

My wife has been very understanding about my rifle obsession, To maintain the myth that a man needs more than one big game rifle I make sure every rifle gets walked at least once every Hunting Season. My current favorites are Ruger Hawkeye 338 wm, Browning A bolt Stalker 300 wm, Vanguard 270 win. 2 seasons ago I got 3 deer with 3 different rifles.

I don't believe in the "safe queen" idea at all.

I have a small number of "deer-sized game" capable firearms, including the M305 (I have shot a deer with it, very tasty one too) and No5 .303 I have talked about on here... and only one is getting slid to the back of the gun safe because it is a heavy bugger and I'm getting old.

I cannot hold onto anything I don't use or know I won't use soon. Only laziness and my Credit Union not doing EMT has stopped me from throwing some stuff up on the EE, including a firearm.

I have a Remington 7mm mag that i bought solely for the action, I was planning to make a custom wildcat with it but decide to spend money elsewhere. I have never even put a round through it, but when hunting season comes around I always take my Tikka Deluxe Whitetail Hunter in 30-06. It has never let me down, plus I have a connection with it and know its ballistics, I know where to hold. Also...I'm not afraid of the recoil.:sniper:

The last few years I have only hunted deer, so I used the same gun a T3 in 6.5 Swede.

When I hunted everything, I tended to use a Sako AV 300 Win Mag and then if it was a deer only trip a Kimber 308. When I moved south to the Edmonton area I downsized my stash.

These are the responses that I figured that I would get. I like to think that I don't have any safe queens, but I am really kidding myself. I have used different rifles on deer from one of my .243's to my .338 ultra mag, but when I go for the big stuff, I tend to bring the same gun every time. Don't tell my wife though ...

I like to mix it up. I personally think it's a waste to have guns sit in the safe year after year. I have favorites but I like to use them all, and if I don't lilke one, I'll sell it and buy another.

I take out the same centerfire firearm 75% of the time I go out. I have shot a lot of big game and seem to see game everywhere when I have it. The rest of the time I take something else I don’t see a thing. One season I did not hunt with it and did not see a thing the whole season. Maybe it is just dumb luck that I don’t see anything with other firearms or maybe it’s just me thinking I need to carry this firearm.

i own many and hunt with two or three. always developing hunting loads but usually fall back on my 300 or 7mag. this year is the year of my custom 338 06.

I try to tell myself to upgrade to a better, lighter rifle (and have bought a few) but I always end up taking my 6.5x55 Mauser 98 with a 28 inch target barrel because wherever the crosshairs rest, it makes a hole. 85gr to 160gr it makes tiny groups and will take any thing from gophers to elk.

I take out all sorts of rifles all the time, but if I am going on a horse/fly in/back country type trip, the only rifles I will choose are my custom 300WSM M70 and my Ruger Alaskan 375 Ruger with Macmillan stock.
