Sample packs?

Is there somewhere I can get a sample pack of different weight bullets in a given calibre? I've got a .223 on the way, and the data on the net is throwing me for a loop! Most of what I've read seems to show that 1:9 twist is best with 55-69 gr bullets, but another test showed that 39g gave the best groups on the same model gun that im getting. So, I figured it might be best if I can get my hands on a selection of weights to do my own testing, without having to buy whole boxes.

far as I know, there are no 39gr bullets for 223, 40gr yes. Shoot me your address and I will put together a sample pack of various weights you can try out. What kinds of powder do you have on the shelf to use for your loads? FS

I have IMR4198 and IMR4895. Might grab something else, too - I need primers still (only have large right now).

The reason it shows a weight range for that twist but they had good success with lighter bullets is because you can generally go lower In bullet weight then recommended but if you go higher then recommended there is a good chance you won't stabilize the bullet

This is quite common in the US. I don't know of any Canadian retailers off hand that offer this though.

Years ago you could also buy sample packs of powder from Higginsons in Ont but that practice has since been discontinued. Unfortunate because this was an ideal way to try some powders without committing to buying a large quantity of a powder that might not work for your particular application.
 
Non of the Manufacturers currently do this, but as mentioned there were at times some dealers who opened their stock and sold product like this.

Not true like another member stated they are very common on US shelves but for some reason never seen in canada. Most are 12 packs. Seen Nosler and hornady for sure there just a few months ago

As I said non of the bullet makers are doing this, but dealers do open them up and sell as packs/repackage. Would be nice to see a company doing it here too, but likely not enough demand and margin for it.

There is new sample pack product out on the market that a bud that goes to the trade shows told me about. I'll see if he bought some. FS
 
That would be nice to see in the Canadian market if a shop could import it. If it is just brought in by one of the middle men and passed on it will probably be too expensive to sell.

Not so sure.... look in the Sinclair Intl catalog (Brownells) they have sample packs available from Sierra & Nolser. Part #'s seem to correspond to the OEM numbers, packing is fancy and Mfr related. Can't really see a mail order company breaking down bulk packs, repacking with fancy labels matching the original manufacturer and making a profit for the few bucks these sample packs sell for.

I have seen these same sample packs for sale at other US sites as well so....I would think it is more of a special deal struck with the manufacturers and larger product suppliers.
 
Every red-blooded rifleman has a shelf of part boxes of bullets that he tried and didn't end up using.

The real gun-nuts have stuff that they sold the rifle for years ago.

The true rifle-loonies have bullets in calibers that they have never owned or shot! :D
 
I thought the 50 packs were considered samplers?;):D

Seriously, you need at least a couple dozen to be able to run even a minimal amount of load testing with one powder. Add in a couple of powder choices and 50 hardly makes it.

Just got the 2012 catalog in the mail from Sinclair last week and they have sample packs in their catalog.
