Sandhill Crane 3" Shotgun??!?

3 inch will easily bring them down. The biggest lesson I've learned on them is lead them wayyyy further than you would ever think. We paced one last fall flying very casually at 80 km/hr with very little tail win.

Endangered whooping cranes in the area might give the SK Environment ministry reason to shut down the sandhill crane season because too many people still don't know the difference. Educate yourself before trying crane hunting! Juvenile Whoopers are not white but rust coloured, quite different than sandhills but possible to confuse at dawn if you aren't paying attention and don't use your ears at all.
I have shot only a couple dozen cranes, but they seem to die efficiently if you hit them properly with 2-3/4" 12 ga. shells loaded with #1 to BB steel shot at under 45 yards or so. The last couple cranes that I shot were killed cleanly with a 16 ga. and TM #5 shot. Don't take " hope" shots and hit where the bird is and regular shells will do fine.
People who make fun of crane meat always trot out the old bad joke about eating rocks instead. Those people don't know how to cook game birds. Cranes can be good eating.
