Sandhill Crane hunting

We decoyed them in standing grain in Sk. It was a heck of a lot of fun. Taste was a bout par with snow goose.

I don't think you can hunt them in Ontario?
I am not growing grain so they are very welcome here. They forage around in the hay field, eating bad insects and such. Grain farmers may have a different opinion.

I was told it was illegal to hunt them years back, if this is true when did it become legal to hunt them again? I don't see a seaso listed in the reg's

It's not legal in Alberta. Because we've got a resident population of whoopers, F&W thought it would be best to avoid the risk of an accidental kill. They were pushing through a short sandhill season last year, I believe, in areas outside the Whoopers' migratory path, but it was killed at the last minute by a ministerial decision. One of the bios talked about it a bit at last year's hunter's night.

You have to be able to mimic the cry of the Female Sandhill crane, it's a very long and drawn out kinda....CCCCRRRREEEEEWWWWWWW(crew), while rolling your tongue. They don't sell calls for them so you have to go out and record their call, then practice in front of friends and family, even in front of strangers, as they can be less patronizing.

Just started to read responses and this made me laugh. I'm remembering a road trip before goose hunting season one year where I had a goose calling CD on in the car the whole way to the inlaw's house. The wife was fine sleeping through that until I started practising with the call!

I just go about 10 minutes down the road from me, all the sandhill cranes you can want.I'm in the interlake , sandhills everywhere. They even come in to our duck and goose decoys. Grain fields are full of them too ! And yes , they are good eating, just have to prepare them right.

Any chance you might have or know someone who would lease a likely field for a hunt or two? Or crown land that would be productive? Where abouts in the interlake are you? I'm more than willing to drive for a hunt and it sounds like you know the ropes.
