I recently acquired a belt/disc sander that my dad had. I remember he used to have a stick of adhesive stuff that you put against the rotating sanding pad that got hot and you could then put a new disc on it. I looked all over the cellar and could not find it. Does anyone know where you can get this type of cement today? It was such an ugly looking piece of stuff that my mom could have thrown it out when cleaning up.

Yep. Peel off the paper backing, and never have to swear and curse lumps, uneven running, and bald spots on the backing disk ever again.

The "Good Old Days" are called that because we lived through them, not because they were better!
 
Spray adhesive in an aerosol can would likely work. I would have to dig out the can, but believe it is a contact type of product where one applies adhesive to both surfaces. It is likely available at craft supply stores.

3M Spray 77 cement.

Buy yourself a can of Acetone too, for cleaning off the residue before applying.

But seriously, buy the PSA disks. Staple the old ones to chunks of 2x4 to use for knocking rough edges off stuff that is going to be buried under something else.
 
I'm using FREEMAN latex disc cement. You brush it on both the disc and the paper. Wait 10 minutes,stick the paper on the disc and use a roller to press down and remove any wrinkles. I have been using this latex disc cement for over 20 years and I'm very happy with it. The only bad thing is it smells very strongly like urine.
 
Buy the 3m spray at CT.. spray your disc and let dry for abit.. the press your sheet abrasive on and trim off the rest off with a dry wall knife..
It is alot cheeper than buying those psa discs ! And the selection of sheet abrasive is great

.. this is why a 9inch disc is great because you can use 9 x 11 sheet abrasive ... also buy it by the large pack because you really get hosed on those small packs in cost
