sanding down my sks stock?

I would be very interested which stain and I would assume a few others would be as well.

I believe it is red oak stain. Another fellow used red oak on here and it looked nice. I want to try a cherry stain to see what it will turn out like.

You do NOT have to sand the finish off. Use Circa 1850 wood stripper. It works GREAT and just a light sand to get any rough edges or grain smooth.
 
I used red oak and it took alright, but it fell and took a dent. When I stripped and sanded it again, it took the stain even better. When I sanded, it just did a light sanding, It actually brought out another factory stamp that was not visible previously. If you strip it, do 2 coats, sand and stain. You should end up with a nice finish. If you aren't happy, try it once more, just don't sand too much; there is no need.
