Im looking for a backpacking defense shorty and have narrowed it down to these two. I'd want the 14" sap6 for the chokes. Gotta have chokes.

Ive heard of the quirks of the Sap6 but bet they are pretty good overall after break-in. i havent found much on the Uzkon tho.

So which gun is better in your opinion? You can also talk me out of a box fed too if you wish. I just like the higher capacity with short barrel. Also, are there any 20 gauge shortys out there?

Had the uzkon. Hated it as soon as it was in my hands. Suggest you go put your hands on one...see if you like it enough to even give it a proper "breaking in"...very similar to the sap6, there is also the Seraphim "storm" just released, check it out?

I have the Uzkon, didn't have a chance to take it out yet. I did notice the mag release is a bit too far out of reach though...maybe a mag release similar to the sap6 would be more comfortable when doing mag changes?

I would avoid box magazine shotguns altogether for a "bet your life on it" shotgun. Every mag fed shotgun on the market has occasional feed issues (it's the shape of 12 gauge shells - they just don't lend themselves to box magazine feed systems well). And the law as written by Mr. Murphy states that "occasional" will be exactly when you need it most.

The money would be better spend on a good tube fed shorty.

After owning a sap6 and having nothing but trouble with it I would steer well away from that platform.
As others have suggested, if it's for wilderness defense get a good tube fed shotgun like Fabarm pistola, STF12 or the classic 870P with 14" or mossy 590A1 14" or if you want shorter (less ammo) Dlask 8.5.

I have had all these shotguns except the STF12 , and all would be a great choice for a defend your life experience.

One option for mag fed is also the Valtro Pm5 mag fed shotgun which has excellent reviews or reliability.
I will own one one day but the mags are pretty expensive.
