Hi there

Well I'm new to hunting in Canada and recently started playing with the pred. hunting idea. I need lots of tips and advice.
First I am thinking of getting a yote rifle but don't know what cal. to get for the terrain I am hunting.
Was thinking 243, 223 ,22-250. which one would be best suited for hunting in Saskatchewan (can be windy and longer shot's are the norm)
but I want minimum pelt damage.

Where do I start looking for yotes?
Anyother tips/tactics would be appreciated

Boer seun, were in the province do you live? Maybe I could show you a few things. For a rifle, I would look at a 204 if you reload, if you dont I would get a 22-250. Also always watch down wind, coyotes like to circule (sp?) down to get a wiff of what they're going to sneak up on.

Hey thanks you guys, rotax I live in Saskatoon but I am willing to travel It would be great if you could show me the ropes

I don't have anything really suited for yotes (useing the 30/06)
I am thinking about getting a Stevens mod 200 what kind of optics would you guys advise me to get?

I do reload but would like to get a comercially available cartrige so think 22-250 It will be instead of the 204

Boer, I live at Kenosee lake!

You can get 204 commercially too, but if you want a Stevens I would get the 22-250. As far as a scope I use a 2.5-10 X 42mm AO Tasco, I dont really like the AO, so I am looking for something else, maybe a 5-15 or something in that range.

I know of a village you could probably buy. It's called Venn about an hour or so from Stoon, only 15 souls live there of which most is relatives of the old man I use to ranch for!

A good scope for coyotes would be one of the Bushnell Elite serries scopes. Good scopes and won't break the bank.
How much can I expect to pay for one?

If you are looking in the $150 class for a scope try Hawke Optics. Got one a while ago from Scott at Airguns only. These things have very good glass, are durable and well built.
These are manufactured in the UK by a bunch of ex-Luepold employees
You can check out Scotts website at:

good hunting!

I live south of saskatoon and hunt coyotes quite a bit. I use a stevens 22-250 with a 6-18x50 bushnell....a NEF in 204 ruger with a 4-16x50 tasco and on windy days i use my 300 ultra mag with handloaded 150 grain FMJ so it dont wreck the pelt. the 300 has a fixed 10 power elite tactical scope and i love it....the raingaurd actually works great. ecinomicaly the 204 and 22-250 are by far the better idea....youll learn to allow for wind

So I went yote hunting again on Saturday. Used a Primos "Raspy coaxer"
and had 2 yotes ontop of hill looking down on me with in 10min of calling, only problem was it was 800yards away!
I kept calling, hoped that they will come closer after awhile there was 2 more on the hill, could have been pups but was too far to see.
So anyone have tips on getting the buggers to come in closer?

I’ve had this happen a few times, sometimes they evencially come, 50 min later, sometime I just slip away quietly and try them another day.

Don’t forget to consider the 17 Remington. Shoot them in the ribs out to 150yrd there dead befor they hid the ground and there is no pelt damage. Passed that they start to exit with a hole about the size of my thumbnail. One time I had a two-inch hole, I don’t know what happened that time. I’ve killed 30 coyotes with it now and I’m very pleased with it and so will you be if you can shoot well and wait for the rib shot. I shot one in the shoulder once it hit the ground like a tone of bricks only to get up and run away on three legs; wait for the ribs and you will be happy with it.

I’ve killed a lot more with the 22 250 and found the 52gr HP Speer at about 3700fps to work the best for me. Shoot the shoulder and if they are close enough it will often stay in.
They both work well it just that the 17 Remington leaves you with LOT LESS SEWING.

I’ve never used one but I can’t help but think that the 204 Ruger just might be the best coyote round of all times.

That’s my three bits.
