Sask gopher safari

As a kid growing up around Killdeer in the south it was as was mentioned, find a spot and spend hours shooting. And there used to be a price per tail for the local RM to more than cover the cost of cheap Federal .22 shells from Montana.

I set traps for them with my grandfather 40 years ago on a ranch bordering the the Bow river not too far from Calgary. I think my grandfather was given access to fish there because he made an effort to reduce the gopher numbers. There was gopher holes all over the field that ran along the river.

Its worse in Manitoba, its been years since I have seen any field full of gophers. hell they are practically unicorns now

Pretty scarce in south western Manitoba but there always seems to another nuisance pest to take their place, last few years its been woodchucks and beavers.

Wow, good info on the population, assumed they'd still be rampant.

Been 30yrs since I was out and it was as per above, pack a lunch, sit down and shoot non-stop all afternoon.

I'm part of the "shoot a brick on Saturday and another on Sunday" crowd from way back...Don't think I've shot 10 gophers on my own land (cent Ab.) in the last 10 years and never once used poison, they just all died of from some unknown reason a few years ago . I drive Cent. Ab. a lot and can drive all summer and not see more than a couple dead gophers on the highway so don't go to the trouble and expense of planning a big gopher shoot unless you have an inside track on a spot...cuz chanses are your old spots will be duds.

They are coming back slowly-4 years ago I got 7, year after that 16,year after that about the same, and last year 57. Yes I went through a whole 50 Rd box of M2.....high hopes for this year as I purposely left 16 alone...
