Sask hunting calibres

Yep, can't use your .44-40 or .45colt but can use a .204ruger.

...

'Cause there are so many big-game .20cal bullets out there...:bangHead:

Honestly can't wrap my head around the thinking behind this change.

Really? A 20 cal for big game?!

I always planned to shoot a deer with my .357 magnum carbine. Not any more! i suppose the regs were changed to be more in line with thinking in the USA where the use of the .223 is widely accepted for deer hunting. I'd personally feel more comfortable with a .357 mag 158 gr. @ 1700 fps than a .223 60 gr. @ 3000 fps as a legal minimum, especially for anything bigger than deer - but the fashion trends are pointing the other direction.

Any way to fight this? I’m pissed I can’t use my .357 rifle and 25-20 and 44-40 has be used for years. If there’s some pushback maybe change?

The guy who came up with that ridiculous rule was probably the same guy who tried to cancel archery mule deer.

He was probably pissed he was unsuccessful in cancelling it so he made up complete BS rules. There's probably going to be a few animals with .223 wholes in them running around this fall.

The fact that you can now shoot a moose with a .223 Rem doesn't mean you should but you know damn well some idiots will do it. It'll be the same guys who keep telling you they prefer shooting at running game because its "easier". The same guy who keep telling you the story of that coyote they killed standing, off-hand, at 400 meters and they know because they "measured the distance".

It may change next season after the COs complain that there were hundreds reported animals with minuscule wholes through them left to waste away in a ditch...

The local CO's are pissed and want all of us to get together and complain with letters to our politicians and get a petition started. I've sent the letters but don't know how to go about the petition thing. I can't use my ruger carbine any more or my various other rifles chambered in old fashioned or pistol cartridges. My 44 mag rifle load has more energy at 100 yards than a 150 gr 30-30 load at the muzzle. It just doesn't make sense. The wardens have no idea where it came from but now they have to enforce something they don't believe in. Now instead of doing hteir job they will have to be out putting down wounded animals. There are people around talking how they will be blasting away with their 204's and 223's using v-max's and such.

It was quite an eye opener on Reddit today how many people think 223 is the perfect round for hunting deer.

Its my sons first year hunting and even though I have a .223 I purchased him a new .243 which I feel should be the absolute minimum. No idea why some politician thinks a .223 is ok for taking big game....stupidity know no bounds.

.44Mag isn't named on the list of not allowed, and it meets the specification for length of empty cartridge case (not less than 32mm.)

44 mag, 357 mag, 44-40, 38-40, 45 colt are all the same length case. I wasn't so mad about allowing 22 cal because used right by a right minded hunter it is adequate but the guys talking about using it now are the ones that shoot at running deer with a crooked shooting rifle and usually shoot guts or legs with their 7mm's or 300's and loose a few deer every year as it is. Now they think they will have an advantage with a fast 22-250 so they'll shoot better. The thing that makes me angry is deleting cartridges that work very well and have been working well for 145 years like the 44-40 and 45 colt.

People were hunting with pistol caliber carbines. This new change was to eliminate that. Its still a work in progress, making the regulation based on case length and not caliber. They need to go to energy base and completely stay away from case and caliber in imo

Lots of panties are getting twisted up over this one. It seams to work in Alaska bc Manitoba Montana Wyoming and a host of other places. A bullet in the right place will work and one in the guys won’t. I’ll bet ther will still be lots of critters shot in the guys and legs with the various 270 7 mags and 300s like there is every year.

I agree with you in that sense (about the 223 working elsewhere), and about the orange army...there's always going to be lousy hunters/shooters and they're still going to be just that. A change of caliber isn't going to make a poor hunter great, or a great hunter lousy.

The thing I don’t understand is limiting a bunch of the old cals and small but potent ones. .44-40 and 25-20 are more than capable in good hands. Is there a rash of wounded animals or what?
