Sask Muzzleloader hunt Fort La Corne

My hunting buddy has relatives in Saskatchewan and their property borders on the Fort à la Corne Provincial Forest. They have invited us out to hunt there this October. We have applied for our out of province licence.

Just wondering what kind of hunting pressure we will encounter there in ML season and would it be best to go early in October or late in October. I want to go late but my buddy thinks early is better.

Any help from anyone who knows the area would be appreciated.
 
If you have a draw for moose or elk there will be some pressure. Also, there is a fair bit of pressure from aboriginal hunters in that area. However, my experience with white tails is that there is minimal pressure in BP season.

Get some bait stands set up along the forest fringe and you should have some action. My suggestion is to start baiting with apples at the end of sept to get them coming in then switch to grains in Oct.

BP deer season is great in Sask. I've tagged out on deer 18 of the last 20 seasons by the third week of Oct and a few nice bucks as well.

The weather is nice, no bugs, minimal pressure and there are deer to be had. As to early or late you may encounter some pre rut activity late in Oct but that is a slim chance. Early Oct the leaves are still on the trees and that may or may not be a problem. Last season I tagged the buck on my avatar on the first day of the season. If you get a chance to locate deer in Sept and get some baits going ( I start scouting at the end of Aug) then early is the way to go.

As he is from out of province, he can't enter the draw for moose or elk. For those animals he'd have to pay a licensed outfitter for a guided hunt. (Rest of Canada residents can enter a draw for whitetail deer.)
 
yes, it's for whitetail and the property borders on the forest so it should be a good spot. We bait with apples here in NS but I thought they use peas, grain, or alfalfa in Sask. Where would you get the apples? In NS we buy 800 lbs for $55. , they are drops that can't be sold once they hit the ground.
 
Saying this date or that date within a few weeks in October is up for grabs. Until the fall weather takes root you could be up against the odds IMO. Chances are pretty good the rut will not start until at least November, even later maybe. But generally whitetail deer hunters will see more movement/activity during cooler daytime temp's. Early is nice for less hunter pressure, but if it is accompanied by warmer weather the deer will feel less inclined to move/eat. If I were you I'd choose the later time frame in October & cross my fingers. Myself I would not worry about the apples, your Nova Scotian-ness is showing! ;) But if you really feel so inclined I'm pretty sure mature alfalfa would do just as well, if not better. And much easier & probably free to come by in the rural west. It's very common to find it growing wild in ditches near windblown prairie farm fields.

PS: If you've never deer hunted in Saskatchewan before you are going to be in for a real treat. Don't forget the digital camera for those memorable shots.

Wow that is pretty low price for apples. Over here I get them from neighbours trees. ( Mostly small crab apples and such) I don't use much maybe a couple of 5 gallon pails total. I'll use a couple of gallons in the early season because alphalfa is too plentiful and I want to give them something they want more than that. I've found they really love apples in Sept ( bow season ) but then ignore them and go for grain come Oct. Alphalfa works well once there is snow and food gets scarce.

Did you draw a Canadian resident whitetail tag? Might want to check the season dates as Canadian res can only hunt one week in late nov.
