No moose for me but I have a mule deer tag. Is the land posted?[/QUOTE
Pretty much all posted and zero public land. Gotta knock on doors. Do it before harvest too.

Why is it so important to do it before harvest? Also, there are some big hills in the area... are they posted as well?No moose for me but I have a mule deer tag. Is the land posted?[/QUOTE

Farmers work long hours, little sleep, high stress time of year.
Could be short tempered.
I have to go and do some scouting and make some friends.Zone 12 was basically one guys land I thought. Bratten or something like that. I was there 20 years ago. On foot only. Fenced in. Can retrieve with ATV. ( back then ) No fires. We camped on his land during archery season for mule deer. Only where he said we could camp.

Harvest is very busy and chances are you wont find the man of the house. Never ask permission from a women on a farm as they will most of the times say no. If you go early like July or early Aug you should be good. The Buffalo Pound Valley is right full of mule deer...its a great place to zero in on. Any valley in that zone is gonna have mule deer.

Had my first 2 hunters asking for permission to hunt Elk yesterday.

So as a farmland owner SKHunter do prefer people asking you early or would you rather it be closer to the dates that the season opens?

That doesn't really matter much to me. What does matter is how you ask.
The 2 guys drove up as I was putting a tire on a tractor. They got out of the truck, introduced themselves, said where they were from (Prince Albert) and explained that they each had a 15 year old son that was drawn for Elk.
We talked for half an hour about the good areas to hunt, they asked if it would be alright to do some scouting, put up some cameras and assured me they would not go on the land without letting me know first. They asked if I had any restrictions, came with an RM map in hand.
Overall they were very respectful and appreciative. Needless to say, they got permission and I gave them the names of a couple neighbours that would let them hunt as well.
Now if they had of rolled up in a dust cloud, rolled down the window and told me they wanted to hunt my land, things might of been different.
Another sure way to be refused is calling me on the phone. If you can't be bothered to show up and look me in the eye, I have no time for you.

And even if a landowner would give permission to strangers over the 'phone, talking face to face on site is bound to get more useful information about his land and local conditions that will help find game and avoid doing stuff that make him regret having given permission.
Antlerless moose here.
Anybody in 45E?
