Saskatchewan Gophers

i am in the se and there seems to be a serious lack of them in my regular spots
i think it is due to the large population of coyotes but it could also be from all of the flooding we had last year

Gopher Road kill about it in the SW. More coyotes then last year, a lot more tracks over the winter in the little snow we had, and more sightings. Not speanding the Easter weekend looking for eggs, I'll be out looking for gophers and coyotes.

I saw my first one today. Numbers of gophers are down....wet weather is probably partly to blame but there was also a lot of strychnine put out the last two years.
To bad...I would sooner see them die of lead poisoning!

Went out yesterday to my good sposts down by Hodgeville and Kinkaid area and the number were very very low. It was windy which may have kept a few down in their holes.

It doesn't sound encouraging. Might have to start hunting stray cats for fun.

The wind in Swifty sucked this weekend. I didn't get 1/3 of the shooting I wanted to get in. Shot maybe 10 gophers in two days. The long grass isn't helping anything either. We need a dry summer for the gopher population to recover from last years floods.

We didn't get any of the snow, but sadly we don't have any gophers either. I was going to do some shooting but it was way too windy.

Hey Guys,

It's almost been a month since the last report - have the gopher sightings improved?

Thinking of going on a gopher safari before the end of May in areas south of Regina.

How tall is the grass and, are the little gophers popping-up yet?

Wondering how the numbers are in the rest of the province too.

Thanks for your feedback! SD

I have found a couple of places right around home with a few gophers, but I haven't been to my "good" spots yet. Between rain, snow, more rain, and more snow and rain, this has been a pi$$ poor spring for everybody. It is getting wet around here, to the point of being almost like last spring - a disaster for farmers.

Here's hoping, as I have another nice new 10/22, a new CZ .17, and a couple of untried .223's. I haven't been called to work at my profession, nor have I been called to help with spring farm work, but I do have another iron in the fire. I am going to get trained to run a locomotive switcher! You just never know what old kjohn might be up to next!!:p

Last year was a slow year south of speedy creek. We, 5 of us from BC, are headed back May 18 2012. Even with low numbers we always manage to have a "blast". My friend who lives there says they (gophers) are out but not sure of the numbers.
