So the opening day of mule deer rifle season started today in Saskatchewan .
Drew a antlerless and a either ### tag, figured I'd focus on a doe today and maybe try for a buck tomorrow.
Since I'd drawn a either ### tag I could shoot a antlerless deer on Nov 1, otherwise it's Nov 10th.
My dad and I went to my secret mule deer hidey hole and found the pasture water logged with quite a few cows in the area. Splashed around for an hour or so and saw very little sign....on to Plan B.
Drove a few miles away and spied a doe about 500m away. Tried a sneak but like deer occasionally do....it disappeared.
Another mile or so came into a large open area with some small rolling hills.
Jumped out of the truck and started following the tree line and glassing......saw 2 bucks about 700m away.
I figured I was about 250m away and hugged a small draw to get into the field a bit for a better vantage point.
Saw the 2 deer just inside the trees when they started trotting out into the field.
Second buck was the bigger of the pair and as he was slightly quartering away and slowly walking I shot him through the lungs......down he goes!
Up he comes and starts running when I gave him another with the 250 Ackley.......a little far back but clipped the bottom of his spine.
Pretty big bodied deer.......that's my 5'7" father standing beside the deer.
After field dressing we hung him on the scale.......pic might be hard to see but it's bang on 285 lbs!
So I'm just guessing but maybe 40 lbs of innards?
That would make him a 325 lb deer.........lots of sausages this year.
