Hi guys
my wife and I are planning to relocate in Saskatchewan this spring as I'm retired and am right into bird hunting. I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for Pheasant country where we can start looking for a place to live
thanks
Bruce

Not sure about pheasants here in Sask. but upland game bird hunting is very good and the duck and goose hunting superb. Compared to other places there is very little hunting pressure. Sharptails are quite common, grouse and spruce grouse in the north,Sage hens in the southwest, just about anywhere in sask. has good upland game hunting.

I have seen ring necks around the Moose Jaw area, as individuals have been releasing birds back into the wild for sporting. I have heard that Val Marie has also started to release birds as well as in the South East. I would say find a place that you want to live and drive to the birds as Sask. has everything if you just drive to it ?

You have to look south of #1 highway for any number of pheasant, there are only remnant populations North of #1. The Frenchman river valley, and the area generally south of Weyburn are the best bets. You can get habitat maps from the ministry of environment in Regina, that's where I'd suggest you start.

If your're looking to see alot a pheasant like 50-70 birds go down south to Estevan and hunt near boundry. I hunted there last fall with out a dog and flushed many birds walking through small sloughs and willlow thickets, it was awsome.
There are some pheasant around Moose Jaw but they are hunted real hard and are very smart. They are all located south of the city but really not worth planning a hunt for when you can go to Estavan, Weyburn and that area and easily bag your limit with out a dog.
South Sask river near Lemsford ferry has a tonne of birds as well but you can't hunt them till the late season I believe, I never hunted them there but see alot when hunting mulies in that area.

Cheers!!

Just curious about the Sage hen comment. I was under the impression that Sage Grouse were endagered in both AB and Sask. Though open in MT last time I checked.

Pudelpointer, Sage hens are VERY rare, if not completely extirpated from Saskatchewan. I've seen them just once, about thirty years ago, and right on the Montana / SK border. I don't think they have been legal game birds here since about the 1950's.

Has anyone ever spotted a lesser prairie chicken in Sask? My dad spoke a lot about shooting them in Western Manitoba and SE Sask during the 1950's. They just seemed to go the way of the do-do bird in the 60's. I myself have never seen a live one.

Thanks everyone for the information on birds in Saskatchewan. Some of the comments confirmed what I had been thinking and some of them were new information that will be very useful as we look around the province.
