Was visiting the wife's side this wknd, and brought home a copy of the Sask. regs.

Concerning Sask. Resident draws, I couldn't find any info. Are the Sask Resident draws strictly a, "lottery" type; ie you could feasibly apply till the second coming and never actually get drawn while the, "lucky" ones get drawn repeatedly,

or is it like AB where if you apply and aren't drawn you build priority and eventually you will, without a doubt and in your turn, get drawn?

If so, how many years for a moose, elk, mule, or antelope tag? (obviously other than a year like this when antelope was wisely IMO suspended)

Not meaning it to sound anything other than a question. Just wanting to know how the Sask. system works is all and I could find nothing about how the system works in the reg book.

thanks.

There have been a few threads recently regarding the resident big game draw system here in Saskatchewan. Some believe that the system sucks and needs to be changed, while some believe the system is fine just the way it is.

In the latest issue of the Outdoor Edge (pg 37), SWF published an article describing how the draw system works in detail. I, for one, found the information in the article very useful. Below are a few key points from the article.

Draw System
- The only human intervention in the draw is when they draw a random 9 digit number out of a box. This number is used by the computer to assign random numbers to each application in the draw and for the algorithm for the computer software used to generate the draw results.
- An application is what is drawn...not an individual applicant.
- All applicants on an application are assigned a license when the application is drawn.
- It takes ~30 mins for the computer software to run the draw.

Algorithm
- Applications are placed in order based on their random number and priority pool status for each species.
- Once an application is drawn (its place in the order) the program will check the 1st zone selection and determine if there are licenses available from the quota. If not, it will go to your 2nd zone selection and so on.

Key points
- The likelihood of there being a license available depends on how many other applications which selected the same zone choice were drawn ahead of that application.
- Applications for popular zone choices will need to be drawn sooner for there to be available licenses remaining.
- Choosing a zone with a larger quota will increase the chance of there being available remaining licenses for an application further down the order.
