Hello, I have been reading as much as I can and watching videos on the Sauer 100 Classic XT rifle. I think there might be one in my near future for sure. I am looking to possibly buy this rifle for a general purpose "bug out" rifle, capable of hunting deer, bear possibly moose. I want to run a good quality low power scope for quick shots while hunting.

My questions relate to which caliber would work the best for me. Does this rifle have different size actions for short, long and magnum calibers? I know the Tikka T3X just has one size action so you might as well pick a long action cartridge like .270 or 30-0- cause you don't gain anything in regards to faster short action bolt throw.

I am contemplating 6.5x55, .308 Win or 30-06 for a general purpose cartridge. Right now I think the .308 Win is the front runner just because of availability and cost while being able to hunt everything I need. But if this rifle is like the Tikka and all built on the same long action I may as well pick a 30-06 Springfield.

I have read all the articles and reviews about the Sauer and it looks like a nice light, fast and handy rifle. Are there any concerns with recoil using a 30-06 or .308, I know this rifle is offered in .300 Win Mag and that must kick like a mule!

I owned a Tikka T3X lite battue synthetic stock in .308 and that thing kicked like a mule so hoping that's not the case with the Sauer. Thanks

So then there is no reason not to get a long action cartridge like a 30-06.

Does anybody know anything about the Sauer 101, is it worth the extra money over the 100? I guess different locking lugs and a sweated on barrel vs threaded. Are they common to see here in Canada?

Great rifles. Go with 30-06 and take advantage of the one action size. The 100 has more value over the 101 for the money especially if you find one in the 800-900$ range.

I have both, the 101 is nice if you'd like sights, different options on stocks, like wood/laminate/soft touch synthetic. Different safety.

I also have some S101s. The bolt has more lugs and is smoother but the 100 bolt is already quite smooth. It also has a 5shot 1MOA guarantee vs 3 shot.
The sauers fluctuate wildly in price, so hard to answer the 'is it worth it'
The 100s could (maybe still can) be found for $750-800 new for the base XT model. I think it's the best firearm deal and I can't think of a better bang for the buck. The Mauser M18 is pretty much a clone and can currently be found for $650 from some site sponsors.
The S101s have occasionally been available for about $1000 new, but are generally about 1700. For $1000, yes I think it is worth the extra few bucks. At $1700, no I personally do not think it's worth the extra money for the base XT model. It could be worth a bit more for some specific 101 configurations with iron sights, different barrel profiles etc. Put whatever you save on some nicer glass.

Have a Sauer 100 in 6.5 prc. Very nice smooth action. Tikka actions I feel are “slick”, the Sauer 100 I feel s more smooth. Hard to explain in words. Very accurate as expected, ergonomically fits me very well, great factory stock. Trigger is also very nice. Nothing to complain about with it. They are a great bang for buck.
