This is my first post and need some help, I have a vintage Sauer Drilling in 16x16 and the 8x57JR and was wondering were or who sells Game bore brand shot shells.Being of 1932 vintage can I shoot the 2 1/2 inch in it,being this old it most likely was chambered for the 2 9/16 shotshell.I am from British Columbia and would love to shoot it Thanks Chisler

I think Kent sells them or maybe Fiocci,don't forget the 8x57 r is a ,318 dia bullet!!Jm

Thanks for the info Jim, I have a lot of ammo that came with this gun in the RWS T MANTEL 196GR APROX 300 RDS IN THE 8X57 JR marked sealed boxes ,but no shotshells can I buy directly from KENT for the shot shells,I took this gun as back up elk hunting this past season and took a few shots totally amazed at how accurate it is.It still has the original case colorings also.NOW i want to go after grouse Thanks

From what Chisler has said to me this was issued to the Luftwaffe
pilots as a "survival" rifle. I'm blown away by the detail work on this item.
I'm sure the Allies had a much more subdued alternative.

Check the proofmarks - I wouldn't be surprised if that firearm is chambered to accept 2 3/4in cartridges. Based on where you may be located, the more prominent gunshops could order Kent Gamebore....the 2.5in shells would be fine but expensive.

Thanks for putting the pics of the Drilling up Zippy,my computer skills are bad.As to the history of this one it was for the sporting shooter.The drilling used in the war by the Luftwaffe was a 12x12 9.3x74 cal and if one was to get their hands on one you would have a gem.They were for the aircrew if they crash landed for survival.As the saying goes the model 30 survival drilling was typical of the high quality flight gear provided to the german Luffwaffe crew early in WW II most examples in the case with all accessories are any where from 22500--37500 and are rare and highly desirable. As for mine its going elk hunting and if I can get some shotshells for it its going grouse and pheasant hunting!!!!! It will be used!!!!

Not to sure about the case colorings and it does have some scope mounts on the barrel but not sure if they are correct for it,I will be taking it to the gun show in Chilliwack and letting the Germans have a look at it March 12/13.At the same time I will be looking for a vintage scope for it as it never came with one

Yes, very tight groups, I let the barrel cool down between shots and two of my hunting buddies took turns also one afternoon taking a break from elk hunting in the Peace river country last fall, pretty sure anyone with this gun could hit what their aiming at, trigger is set up very light.

Look under the bottom of barrels. If its marked 70mm its 23/4. Mine was and I took it to James bay goose hunting, Wonderful shooter and the Indians were so surprized and never saw one before. " Good for everything!! moose,goose ptarmigan!!!"

Zippy the Luftwauf pilot survival drillings were chambered in 9.3x74R with 12 smooth bore beside a rifled choked 12 bore, it all came in a aluminum type case with Brenneck 12 ga shells, regulart shot size 12 gauge and one or 2 pakages of RWS 9.3x74R, along with a cleaning kit! The only marking on the Saure Drilling is a mark(Natzi eagle) were the stock meets the action on the left side and one (Natzi eagle) mark on the barrel or reciever, I can't remember right off.
I was fortunate to have a first hand look at a complete set at a US gunshow about 4-5 years ago, worth there weight in gold nowadays! Alot of people thought these were gifts to high ranking Natzi party members, but no, these were made by JP Sauer with the same quality standards as anyother drilling they made! There were no shortcuts when it came to the Natzi Air commands survival guns especially in the African campaign were most of these drillings were captured.

The case hardening on this Sauer is original to the gun. Nice old drilling.
Like zywina said, the Luftwaffe drillings had markings on them. I was really tempted to buy one a few years back. But the price was a bit too high - it had blood caused pitting on the action and the barrels. The story of that drilling would have been an interesting tale.

I have a Sauer drilling that looks identical, chambers are 65MM and the 8x57IR rifle barrel is .318" diameter. I have only shot it a little so far, but I had no trouble ordering a case of Kent Gamebore traditional 2.5" shotshells for it at my local shop. Any shop stocking Kent shells should also be able to order the Gamebore. One note about those shells, the British "#6" is closer to a North American #7 in size, and Gamebore do not offer a larger size shot. I have a current German hunting catalogue that I picked up there in January, it lists several 65mm/2.5" 16 ga. shells by Sellier & Bellot that a good gunshop may be able to special order for you from S&B. I know for sure that S&B still load the 8x57IR ammo.
I handload larger size lead and bismuth shot for my short chambered 16's, it's not too much trouble and is a fun project besides. Will Bilozir has components from Ballistic Products.
