SAUM based wildcats

Take a look at the website; he has quite a bit of load data posted. The advantages of increasing barrel length are so miniscule that they are not worth mentioning - unless you'd do it to reduce muzzle blast.

Solely for muzzle blast...:D

I'd even go for one of those in .35cal

The shamu gives up maybe 50fps on a good day to a wizzum when loaded to identical COALs, load the SAUM out and you now have more powder room or reduced pressure.

SAUM-1 WSM-0

You're really reachin' on this one, bud ;) What happens when you load the WSM out? There's no replacement for displacement. The WSM will give more velocity with any given bullet. There's no way around that. The SAUM is more efficient and will yield slightly better barrel life. Life is full of trade-off's :)

Interesting that you say the SAUM only gives up 50fps to the WSM. What kind of velocity are you getting from that 140gr TTSX in your pic? How about the 162gr A-Max?

Thats a 150 in the pic, I didnt load it. That was a dummy round that came with the rifle. 162 amaxs over 65 grains of RL25 in my Model 7 (22") are doing 2800. That is quite slow, but Im also using a very slow powder. When I run RL22 and maybe 19 I'll get back with a number.

FWIW, I know guys hitting 3K with the 162 out of 22 and 24" SAUM's.

Perhaps the extra weight would help too...

With a light stock it would weigh ~7lbs in the .458 version. Considering that it has the same case capacity and performance as the .458 WM, a few extra oz couldn't hurt!

See, I'm getting 3100fps from a 24" WSM, and I know a few guys that are getting similar velocities. Some are even getting 3150fps with moly.

All the load data that I've seen, as well as the comparisons on 6br.com, etc, show that the WSM typically gets ~100+fps more than the SAUM.

Whether that 100fps is worth the extra powder and reduced barrel life, is up to the individual :) I personally like to replicate 7RM performance, so the WSM turns my crank. The guys who are in love with the .280AI would really enjoy the SAUM, since it replicates that cartridge.

3100 is cookin hot with the powder you're running :ar15: . One thing I noticed about this SAUM (22" pipe) is that its very picky about what powders you run in it. Too fast and you get wild pressure signs at annemic load weights, too slow and you don't reach peak velocity.

Finicky fer sure.

It's not too bad. The powder charge is consistent with IMR's load data (I'm getting better velocity than what they say they get). The 7RM is capable of 3150fps at max, with the right load, and the 7WSM is only a couple of grains less in capacity, so it makes sense.

The info I have shows wsm - 83.0gr and RM 83.2gr, so virtually identical.

What loads are you using to get 3100 with 160's? That sounds pretty good for a long range rig.

^Yessir, that's what I have, too. They truly are virtually identical in case capacity.

A load of 67gr of IMR7828ssc gets me 3105fps ave with the 162gr A-Max. After some fine-tuning I've settled on 66.5gr, which gets me the same velocity and a bit better accuracy. IMR's max load in their load data is 66gr.
