Hey guys~settling in on this as the next rifle, and while I have 100% confidence in a Savage shooting well...at nearly $1,000...I'd love to hear some first-hand opinions of this model (in this caliber) if you own, or have owned one. I own a Model 10 in .223 ("precision carbine") and have owned everything from Cooper/Remington/Winchester...and have shot Tikka/SAKO as well. So please....if possible~fight the temptation to slam the brand for the fun of it. :) I'm not in a place where a $2,500+++ rifle brings any extra value to the shooting experience. I've "been there/done that" so to speak. (though I hate that expression)

Looking forward to the responses, and if you happen to know where a new/lightly-used copy is in stock...please don't hesitate to let me know. (here, or via PM)

Thanks!

I've had this Savage 10 Predator Brush in .243Win for about three/four seasons now. Took me awhile to figure out the 1:9.25 twist liked between the 68-90gr range, but once that was sorted all has been good. It now sees a steady diet of Nos BTs 70gr getting pushed by IMR 4064. Easily does 1/2-3/4" groups @ 100yrds. Paint is starting to wear on the Bolt knob and the end of barrel, but it is of minor concern to me. Eventually this rig might see a MDT LSS Chassis, but that's way down the road. This particular version is not offered anymore (Brush Camo).

Another option within the Savage line is the Pred Max 1. The one below is a 22-250 w/a 24"" fluted non-bull bbl. It too is typically Savage accurate. The stock on this is the Accustock variant, but I personally don't see any difference between it and the above 10 Predator non-Accustock. If I was to buy this particular model again, I'd be inclined to give a serious look at the 6.5CM or .260Rem (if it is still offered) if I didn't already have the .243Win.

The only other difference between the two models outside of bbl length (22" Vs 24") and profile, is the 10 Predator has the top/side bolt release where-as the Max1 has the bottom/trigger guard release. Both cycle in the same clunky Savage fashion, but lock up solidly. There was a member on here that was selling bolt lift kits for Savages awhile back, but I haven't been able to find it or remember who it was.

Cheers

Thanks for the input~greatly appreciated! Yes, it's the Max1 I'm likely getting, but since I do most of my varmint stuff in the spring summer~the camo is of no consequence. I don't think it adds, or takes away from the gun from my perspective.

Great way to describe the Savage action~that's dead-on. "Clunky, but locks-up solidly". Workhorses indeed...and accurate ones at that. I'm thinking around the 87gr. V-Max, and was hoping the 1:9.25" wasn't too fast a twist rate for that weight. Sounds like you got it sorted-out. If I end-up getting the rifle, I may PM you for some direction on the loads you found worked-out. You don't have to give-up anything you don't want to though!

Thanks again.

I am renting one, it is sitting in a boyds forst camo laminate stock, will soon be adding pillars, some bedding and a 35 remington barrel........but I have got to shoot it as a .243 at least once before I do all of that, so I have loaded 2 rounds for it, I just hope the scope I threw on it is close to being on for the second shot so I can see how accurate it is lol
