Savage 10 BA 200 yard results, factory ammo.

I just thought id post up some decent results from todays shoot. Im using every day Hornady Z-max. Ive been through 6 different types of 168g ammo and this stuff shoots the best by far. I even tried some $43 a box Hornady superformance bonded stuff... the best stuff they make... and the groups opened up to about 8-10 inches. Clearly this gun likes to kill zombies.

Im using the 10 BA with the upper and side rails removed. Ive got a DNZ 20moa one piece tactical mount and a Minox ZA5 6-30X56. This is only my 2nd time shooting this gun at more than 100 yards. The improvement over my last outing is amazing. With more practice I know ill be able to get the groups even tighter. After I feel im getting comfortable with 200 yards ill move out further. No point in frustrating myself right away though.

I've owned a 10BA for about two years now. It's coincidental, after about six months, when I was changing scopes, I removed the bulky factory rail as you did, and installed a Farrel 20 MOA rail. Really 'cleaned up' the gun IMO.

I tried a number of factory rounds, as mentioned I changed out the scope after about six months after buying it, so had to site it in again. I was somewhat like you, different makes opened up groups a lot, almost disappointly so.

I have not tried the Hornady ammo, however, the most accurate I've tried to date is 168 HPBT Black Hills ammo. It produced some very good groups at 200 yards. If you can get your hands on some I'd suggest you try it.

Of course, the best way to to is to reload your own. Something I plan to do this winter.

i'm picking up my new .223 tomorrow, and this weekend i'm going to do a proper break in followed by some 300-400 yard practice, you should get ahold of cory before it gets too cold out and we'll get some good shooting in
 
So, what do others think of these results? Am I on track for factory ammo at 200 yards? I was actually quite pleased after checking my groups... I havnt had these kinds of groups with this gun at 200 yards yet.
 
For factory ammo I'd say your on a decent track the average seems to e under 1moa which is fairly respectable for a factory gun with factory ammo. Some more practice and some hand loads should start to tighten them up some more
 
You have not tried using the ammo that all others are measured against.
168gr or 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match.
You have a 1-10" twist barrel so you can use as heavy a bullet as you like.

In my opinion forget using factory ammo to collect the brass.
For $90.00 you can buy 100 pcs of Lapua brass.
I have a 10 BA also and I started reloading for it from the get go.
I'm not using the best dies or press out there but I have found that good brass does make a big difference.
You can make better ammo with a $130.00 Lee 50th Anniversary Kit, a set of Lee Dies and quality components.

Yes you can spend many times more on better equipment but the gains will be smaller and smaller.

Here are a couple of pics of my 200y groupings using Lee equipment, Lapua brass, 180gr Sierra Matchking bullets, CCI BR-2 primers and Varget.

I did actually try Federal gold metal match and it didnt shoot as well as the much cheaper Hornady. Thanks for the tips though. Im not shooting factory ammo in order to collect brass... I just cant afford to buy a reloading setup right now, all at once. So im just going to spend what I do have on factory ammo and over the winter, when im not shooting, ill save up for a re-loading setup. By that time ill have some decent brass to work with. Maybe not the best, but better than nothing. Thanks again for the tips.
