Just got this thing home and trying to put on the top aluminum rail and it seems the 4 screws supplied are not fitting in the threads on the receiver. Is that possible or am I missing something? I've tried to screw this thing in for an hour! here are the parts im talking about:

any help is greatly appreciated!

do you happen to have a tap and die set? if so try and run the screws through the die and see if the coating comes off, I've had screws that the coating would not let them go into the receiver... if that doesn't work try and run a tap through the receiver the same size as the screw holes

Looks like you have the wrong screws there..
Mine went in fine, and THEY ARE NOT SELF TAPPING!!!!
The only other thing I can think of is that the threads on the rifle have build up of some sort.

brand new rifle, threads look clean...I have the worst luck with things like this...Any chance you know the right size?

i do not want to mess with a brand new rifle. I called cabelas, have to wait til Monday to see what they say..:(

I think you made the right call. With a brand new rifle I wouldn't be tapping anything. They should fit, if not I would make a call before doing anything drastic. Nothing is more frustrating, hope it gets sorted out. Isn't Cabelas open on Saturday?

no, the returns/issues department is not open til monday...I could be waiting a week for screws unless someone knows the right size to buy..

if you use a tap and die your not wrecking anything. All your doing is making sure the threads are clean. would you happen to have any scope mounts with screws you could try? cause the thread will be the normal savage receiver threads

I can try some from one of my Tikkas, after googling I think the screw size is 6-48 whatever that means but it doesn't sound like a home depot/ct item..

...except the chance of returning it, perhaps even the warranty if there is one. Best advice~sit on it, wait until Monday. Hurts like hell to not have a new gun up and running, but I think it's the best move.

Only other thing I'd consider is calling a gunsmith who specializes in Savage. I know there is one in Ontario, Grech Outdoors in Mount Forest. I bet they'd know. Finding the right thread size, length, and head style locally might be another issue altogether.

Also, I'd be polite when I call Cabelas, but VERY demanding too. I'd tell them you want the proper fasteners sent overnight. Demand it. You might not get them to, but they might send it faster than they would have. I've found Cabelas in the states excellent to deal with. I suspect they'll treat you right.

6-48, I've never heard of it. 6-32 is a common machine screw you might find in Home Depot. In S. Ontario there are industrial fastener places like Brafasco that would have stuff like that.

Rifles use goofy threads on their scope base bolts.

If the bolts are bigger then the hole in the receiver, you have 8-40 bolts and the action is tapped for the 6-48. If the reverse,....well you understand.

If the holes in the receiver are smaller, just take some scope base bolts from any other domestic rifle and try them. I bet they fit. Now you just need to get the right length to fit this rail.

If the holes in the receiver are bigger, I can help with some 8-40 bolts.

Was the rail not on the rifle when you got it? Or in the box for your to install?

Simple solution and you are not going mad.

There is a movement for 'tactical' rifles to have larger base bolts BUT that is not what is standard fare. So if the wrong action is bolted to your rig, voila....you know all about it.

Good luck...

the holes in the receiver are smaller. I think they sent me the 110ba bolts which are 8-40 for my 10ba which is 6-48x.5". Its the 6-48 that I need. Rail came separately for packaging reasons probably. Apparently there are 6-48 with different threads? This whole thing is pretty frustrating and I am pretty sure Cabelas receptionist lady that said she will call me back monday will have no clue what I am talking about..Hope I can find some somewhere..

leave the rail off and get a night force rail or something like that. That one is huge and ugly. unless you plan on mounting a grenade launcher on it.:nest:

yep, grenade launcher for sure. That was one of my favorite parts of the rifle lol. That and the principle of a brand new rifle coming with the wrong hardware..

I feel your pain. I mail order a lot of stuff and little stuff like that seems to happen. I would head down to your local gun store if possible and see if the can hook you up in some way.
