Savage 10 fcp-Sr or Rem 700 R5

maybe stop and think about the notion of a "Starter scope". Almost as bad as a "Starter contraceptive". I would look at things the other way around... get a good scope and get a starter rifle, but that's me.

Pick what you want and be wary of people trying to sway you to their personal choices. Remington is never the wrong answer. Tikka is a guaranteed shooter. Savage has everything you want too.

Having owned a Savage HS Precision and now have a Remington LTR both in 308, my experience has shown me that the Savage was a bit more accurate using factory Federal 168SMK. Once I had a load dialed in for the Savage it was exteamly accurate. Still have to work one up for the Remington so can't comment on it yet but I have no worries about it reforming the same.

Both have a HS Precision stock which is a big plus over the regular stock both base modes come with.
Both have good triggers but Savage and there accu-trigger wins hands down.
Cons for the Savage is there sloppy feel to the bolt, feels kinda cheap.
Cons for the LTR is no factory BDM.
If I were to buy another factory built LR rifle I would look at the Savage Precision Carbine but Im a fan of the shorter barrels.

why on earth is that scope so high, I don't know how you can shoot a gun like that, is your chin on the comb?

that scope should be as close to the barrel as possible and even then you might need a riser to get your cheek in the proper position

PM me your e-mail and i will send you some photos of savage, AI, few stocks, scopes for you to see what you can play with.
but first, do you bed and free float your rifles? if so, you can get away with savage axis and still shoot under 1" moa with some tweak and they are only $300?? if you do not want to play around with the rifle, id spend few more dollars with model 10,12 or t3 tack.

too shoot 300-600 yards to a milk jug, 4x12 power scope would work just fine.

The important part is that the sun shield is on though! =)

Those are just the rings that came with the scope, I have to order lower ones. Damn 35mm scope tube....

The scope was put on for looks.

A set from Vortex runs about $200....

Millet makes a $90 set but they won't ship outside of the US... so if anyone knows where I can get a set in Canada it would be appreciated.

I prefer the 5R over the options you've listed including the LTR.

I own the 5R and its out of box accuracy is + or - .5MOA as previously posted with match ammo. Im not a great shooter by any means either. I did replace the trigger with a timney adjustable, and im not a huge fan of the HS stock personally, its the next thing to go.
