Remington 700 SPS Tactical

I am looking at a .308 bolt gun with a 20" bbl. Both these fit the criteria, but I'm still having moments of indecision. I'm leaning towards the Savage for their quality, but I've read some less than stellar reviews of the accustock.

Thoughts? Opinions?

The savage stock is not great, but better than the sps. By the time you upgrade the stock, you would have been further ahead getting the hs or mcmillan fp models and shortening the barrel.

I have a savage 10 fp in 308 it is not the carbine but an excellent gun. Which out performs any and all comers at the range where I shoot. From all the Remington’s that I have seen in the price range I would go with the savage

Depending on where you're buying it from, the Savage is between $100-$200 more than the Remington.

I know this may shock many (lol) but if I had to chose between both of these, I would favour the Savage over the Remington for several reasons.

(1) Faster rate of twist on the barrel. Savage has 1:10" versus the Remington at 1:12".
(2) Detachable magaine as opposed to the internal box of the Remington. It's not something I would be willing to pay extra for but if the rifle comes with it then I'll take it.
(3) The Accustock might not be the best alternative, however, it is reportedly better quality of the Hogue stock on the Remington. Plus, I think the digi-cam treatment on the Savage is appealing.
(4) I own a fair number of SPS's and I've handled the Savage Precision Carbine. IMHO, the Savage has the edge in finish quality.

I don't think the Accutrigger is an advantage over a properly adjusted X-Mark Pro trigger on the Remington. It might be a matter of getting use to the Accutrigger but my initial impressions were less than complimentary.

I'm sure in the hands of a skilled marksman, either rifle would be suitably accurate and I don't think there's an advantage either way.

Try before you buy. The SPS stock is "overmolded";you'll either like it or you won't.

For a short action , the Savage has a longer mag compared to the Remington. You can seat your bullets farther with the Savage and still use your mag. Remington become a singleshot with the longer bullets. Plus you can twist on and off your own barrels with the Savage. There is more aftermarket stuff for the Remington, but I also think the Savage sits nice the way it is.

Not too long ago I was in the same boat, I went to Epps to buy my first 'Precision' Rifle.
I asked for the Remington SPS Tactical....I heard so many "Ohhh's" and "Ahhh's" about this rifle it seemed like my first choice.
I was a little disappointed. The 'rubber' stock was not what I expected, the action was kinda lame and the trigger seemed the same as the one on my M305.

I asked to see the Savage 10FCP, yes it was a few hundred more. But, WOW! The action, the trigger, the Quality......it was a no brainer. I went home with the Savage.

Seriously. Go and actually handle both....you will put the Remington back in the Box.

Check out the Savage 10FP-SR LAW ENFORCEMENT. $663 @ Epps (same price as SPS) and it gets great reviews it has a threaded barrel so you can put on your own brake without having to pay a shop $200 to install one.

I have the SPS-T and many times I have wished I knew more about the savages at the time of purchase.

I would go savage in a heartbeat now.

Savage gets the knod from me too. Exceptional value there! And they are basically the Chevy Smallblock of rifles. The aftermarket is definitely coming around, and with great dealers like Mystic Precision, stocking and accessing everything your heart desires these are quick to become hotrod rifles! Honestly I even have an old Savage Model 10 Tactical, and with a quick stock swap, quality optics and a bedding job, it is shooting bugholes all day. A little bolt timing and the action even feels like a rifle costing up to 3x as much (jerry knows his stuff). I would say this is an easy decision...

I love my 10PC in .308 shoots great and like lineofsight said it is heavier then you would think... it isn't fun carrying through the bush while hunting so now its my target rifle.

I would put the Savage back in the box and leave it at the store. To many problems with one I bought earlier, but nothing a good saw and furnace wouldn't fix. Savage = POS.
