Savage 10 Precision Carbine 308 vs Remington 700 SPS Tactical

Savage gets the knod from me too. Exceptional value there! And they are basically the Chevy Smallblock of rifles.

I'd say Savage is more analogous to a Ford. Possibly even a Dodge.

Hard to dislike a Savage.

There's good and bad in every brand. I'm a Rem fan but I absolutely despise their current 700 line-up save for a few models. Rem really "Jumped the Shark" when they introduced the VTR and abandoned HS for Bell & Carlson on a majority of their non-LE models.

Same goes for Savage. They have some good product sprinkled with a few duds in between. Savage does get the nod for its innovation and their willingness to diversify their product offerings.

I would put the Savage back in the box and leave it at the store. To many problems with one I bought earlier, but nothing a good saw and furnace wouldn't fix. Savage = POS.

Ouch! The Fanboys aren't gonna like that comment at all. Prepare for the hate mail. While I've never had a positively stellar ownership experience with any of the Savages I've owned, I'm now willing to try another.

I have a Savage 10FCP-K Accustock. If I were doing it again, I'd spring the extra money for the MacMillan or HS stock. My accustock arrived slightly twisted, and kept on warping until it was pressed hard against the barrel. The rifle is great, sub-MOA with anything you feed it, but the stock is a total disappointment.

Getting in contact with a Canadian warranty center was like setting up a meeting with Sasquatch. The US office ended up agreeing do take care of it, waiting to see how long it takes for my new stock to show up.

I have a a savage 10 pc, Set up is a bedded TPS base, tps rings, falcon 5-25. Shooting of a harris bi-pod. I love the rifle, shoots great.

Would I by this again...No.

The accustock is good, better the the over mold, and the other factory savage stock, but I believe is a limiting factor. Being the model with the accuwedge, and the trigger guard located bolt release, it is very limited to aftermarket stocks. I plan on loosing the accuwedge and bedding the action, to see if that is effective, before I sink money into a stock .

Would I buy the remington SPS... No ( unless mabey it was the a 700 aac-sd, wich has 1:10 twist barrel)

What I would do, is look for a used stevens 200, get a match grade barrel installed, and put it in a aftermarket stock ( probably look for a take of HS-precision ) put in a new trigger. And Depending on smithing cost, price wise I wouldn't be to far off, but performance wise, Id be way ahead of the game.

I bought a Model 111, Timney trigger, Accustock and a Shillen barrel and sent them off to Mystic to get put together and bedded. It should make a decent hunting rifle. Maybe even Precision in it's own way.

BigDotGlock thats cool... Are they sending you a new one and you get the keep the old one ?

I will buy the old one off you since I have a project in mind...

Yeah the problems I had with my savage were as follows if I can remember.
-Mag would lock into rifle but would not sit up tight in the chamber so the bolt wouldn't load the round.
-I forget what it was but they said in report something had to be changed and re-aligned.
-On the one magazine the magazine was actually coming apart.

Sorry for the lack of info I can't find paper work and kind of gave up on the thing because when I received the rifle Savage said they fixed and test fired the rifle. I took it out that week and the rifle failed to remove casing and eject it on many occasions so I haven't used it since. Waited 4 months for repairs and to me wasn't done satisfactory.

I've shot and have owned both. You run an equal chance of getting a bad apple with either brand. The problem is that those with lemons are more or less screwed, it's not like the store will just take it back.

I figured I'd get a lot of personal opinion and personal experiences in this thread. I was more looking for people who have owned the rifles to tell me what they liked/disliked about them and have a few of the more glaring differences pointed out to me. I'm pretty sure that I'll run with the Savage at this point, the extra couple bucks doesn't turn me off and it seems like something I can use to get out a distance before I spend a mint on a custom rifle. .308 is a good all around cartrige for this and for hunting, so it will fill a few roles should it need to.

The Trigger! on the savage

Just check the barrel for reamer chatter marks before you buy if you can... I had to send my 10PC away to get a new barrel because the old one would copper foul really bad within 20rds. Savage replaced it for free under warranty but It was still 6 months before I got it back. I haven't had a chance to see if this barrel is a shooter or not but I'm sure it will be

The "Small block chevy" reference for the savage is pretty much bang on. I picked up a nice used model 11 with a choate ultimate snipe stock and a straight 10x scope off the EE for $800. I ordered a barrel from Jerry @ Mystic, bedded the stock and she shoots loose one hole groups with factory 150gr FMJ now at 100yrds. Life has really held me back from doing load development so far but I have faith it will be pretty easy. Total investment with optics is now $1250. This rifle has been my first at home custom project, and with the relative ease it was done I find it hard to understand why anyone wouldn't go this route.

Bottom line is Savage makes a platform that will grow with you, Plus you can do the work yourself.

I personally would go for the SPS Tactical. 1 in 10 twist and i was shooting 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards off a bipod with FGMM. 599 at Italian Sporting goods in British Columbia right now. But good luch with your choice!
