I know they are not exactly precision but just wanted some opinions from some of the rifle experts around here. I will be looking to put a trigger and barrel on it in the near future if that makes it a little more precision for you guys.

This is just a way to get started, and I am looking for advice.

I have a Savage 12 BVSS on hold at Epps and am going tomorrow morning.

Anyways the story is that I was originally looking at a Model 10 precision Carbine in .223, but found this at Epps while looking for the model 10.

I already have a .243 Marlin XS7 that is my coyote/deer rig, and a 30-30 for deer so this gun is strictly for bench shooting, and this gun seems to make more sense for that then the model 10 pc.

I was kinda hoping for the more tactical look, and plan on mounting a Bushnell Elite 3200 10 x 40 mm tactical on it, and honestly I am thinking about painting the stock black. Can always sand it clean and re-stain it later.

My range maxes out at 200 m and that is what I will be shooting at. No doubt I will upgrade later but just want to get into some bench shooting with something better than a Stevens 200.

For the price I can't seem to find anything else that gets me as excited. I really have no faith in the Remington SPS tactical, and all the cheap looking plastic savage stocks are not interesting me.

Really it is up between this and a Savage 10 Precision Carbine.

I do like the stock better on the 12 but no detachable mag is probably the only downfall.

Also are all Savage barrels and actions standard? I know there is small shank and large shank but other than that would replacing the barrel on the model 12 be just as easy as the 10?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance
Mark

Both will put big smiles on your face. I prefer the BVSS because the stock is better for target shooting and I have not been impressed with the Accustock nor the paint that is on the PC's

If the tactical look is more your thing, the PC is a good looking and handling rifle. I find the comb a bit low so would put on a cheek riser - simple enough.

For hunting, the det mag is a great product but for the bench or F class, a det mag is not biggie.

Both should shoot similarly. The longer BVSS barrel will give you more performance at long distances.

Get the one that fits you best, have it bedded, bolt timing also not a bad idea - load up some ammo and go have fun.

Either will be easy enough to modify in the future.

Thanks Jerry.

I am gonna be shooting this thing a ton, and kinda making it my mission to start getting into bench/prone shooting.

I ditched the Stevens as it was really hard to find a good stock, and hopefully will be looking to upgrade the trigger and barrel sometime in the near future.

What are wait times on the Shillen Select Matches nowadays?

Might order one when I get my tax return in a few months, but all depends how this thing shoots. Might not notice a difference at 200.

Also where can I shoot further distances in the GTA area?

Is it the BVSS 223 for $789 that I was thinking of getting? :D

Its as good a price as you will find. I paid the same for my 308 BVSS. The BVSS stock is really nice to shoot off bags. In fact its just a nice platform in my oppinion. I would buy it and leave the trigger. I like the accutrigger at least as much as 2 different after market triggers I have bought for savages.

The barrel is the small shank.

EDIT: yep that 223 is marked sold. My 308 sat there for a long time marked at that price. I figured the 223 would of been there more than a few days. I guess the secret is out. BVSS is better than VLP.

Mark, send me a pm or email and we can discuss your barrel needs.

Bummer on the BVSS - great price for a very nice rifle.

For target and prone plinking, the BVSS is a better overall shape to the PC/VLP or other 'hunting/varminting' style stocks.

There is nothing wrong with the VLP. For a walkabout varminter, I love this stock and I also like the det mag. The PC would have a similar stock shape but in polymer.

So they are just great tools for different jobs.

Grab a rifle and load up some ammo and start shooting. Any of these will likely shoot well enough to keep you entertained until the match barrel arrives.

There will be a difference even at 200yds.
